Disappointing experience at the Fenway REI. I felt like I was being watched while browsing. At checkout, the interaction made things worse. The employee was not friendly, handled my items carelessly, and repeatedly questioned whether the membership account I provided was mine. After I gave my phone number, I was still asked to show ID, which felt unnecessary and uncomfortable. I also had to hold my ID up myself, and the employee seemed unsure how to verify it.
Overall, the experience made me feel singled out and not welcome.

Possibly the worst REI I’ve been to yet out of the 12 or so I have visited. Due to the sole fact everyone here seems so unfriendly. Every question I asked I seemed to be bothering them. Plus it took 20 minutes just to get a hello from a worker, most were looking at their phones. Will not return to this location.

What a ridiculous experience.
I mistakenly assumed this REI location opened at 10:00 AM on Friday, only to find out that 10:00 AM is Saturday hours and on Fridays they open at 11:00 AM. That alone is an unnecessary and confusing way to run a store.
I got there at 9:45 AM, parked in the basement, and went to the door at 10:00. The guy in the bicycle department was actually very nice, but he told me the store wouldn’t open until 11:00. I was only there to pick up a pair of sandals, and waiting around for another hour was not part of the plan, so I left.
Then came the real insult: at the parking exit I was hit with a $75 parking fee.
Unbelievable. That’s basically what I paid for these overpriced sandals.
When I spoke to the parking staff, they told me the only way to get parking validation was to go into REI and get it there — which of course would have required me to sit around for an hour waiting for the store to open. Completely absurd setup.
After explaining the situation, the parking manager gave me a break and I still had to pay $12 for a trip that accomplished absolutely nothing.
So here’s the warning: if you’re driving to this REI, be very careful and double-check their hours, because one small mistake can cost you money fast. Between the confusing hours and the ridiculous parking situation, this place turned a simple pickup into a complete waste of time.

A solid go-to spot for anything related to the outdoors. The team is usually welcoming and helpful, and most of the time they’re either well-informed or quick to find someone who knows exactly what you need. On my most recent visit, I was looking for assistance in the kids’ clothing area and unfortunately the two staff members working there weren’t very familiar with the products. That said, overall the store still offers a good experience, a wide selection, and generally reliable customer service.
