I told him about the issues I was having with the poles and he showed me a thing or two about how they work that may help with the issue, but had no problem with my choice to return them. I had a great conversation with him regarding potential replacement options. The breadth of his knowledge on the subject blew me away. I've never had a negative experience at this store. They have a great team and their passion for the things they sell and how they can improve your life experience is unsurpassed.

But I find the service at this store to be highly variable. I was just in the other day and had a great experience. The folks that I talked to were genuinely helpful, and provided some extra information that I wasn't aware of, so kudos to them. I suppose my problem is really with the bike shop area. There only ever seems to be a couple of employees on hand at a time, and if they're working with someone else, good luck getting their attention. When I have worked with an employee they're good at their jobs, knowledgeable, and friendly. However, I waited around for 15-20 minutes on two different days recently, and I never got a chance to talk to anyone. I'm not demanding they drop what they're doing and help me, but they didn't even acknowledge that I was there. Ultimately, I left without buying anything, and I decided that I should have probably been shopping at a local bike shop instead. And in contrast to REI, I went to three different local bike shops, and they were all busy with other customers when I stopped in, and at every one of them an employee said hello within just a few minutes, even if they were working with another customer. In the end I bought a new bike at one of them, and they will probably be getting my future cycling business. So yeah, I like REI, but I probably wouldn't go there unless you're prepared to help yourself. Some days you might get excellent service that goes above and beyond, but some days you might not. I feel like that's a management issue, so I don't blame the employees for it.
