Every time, I’ve come in ready to purchase a significant amount of gear—shoes, a pack, a tent, a sleeping bag, and more—as I’m preparing for a backpacking trip in Utah. Not once has anyone approached me to offer help or ask if I needed assistance finding anything. The one employee I did manage to speak with had no idea what I was referring to and honestly didn’t seem suited to be working in an outdoor-focused store. I even tried coming in at different times of day hoping to find someone knowledgeable or at least interested in helping a paying customer, but no luck. I ended up doing all my research online and making my purchases online as well. Experiences like this are exactly why physical retail stores are struggling—customers don’t want to deal with uninterested or inexperienced staff when they’re ready to buy.
