I noticed in the last year that the irons I had played for 7 years have been giving me a different, ballooning shot shape. Enter Greg and Golftec- Greg conducted a phenomenal fitting. We played with several different iron setups to remedy the issue, and Greg’s intuition steered us closer and closer to what was ultimately the best iron/shaft combo for me. Without his knowledge of the traits of each head/brand, we would have been there for hours! On Greg’s recommendation I ended up bagging 50, 54, 58 wedge setup too, replacing the previous gapping I had. I’ve been loving the new vokeys both on approaches and greenside- glad I listened to Greg. There was a hiccup with procuring the irons that was beyond golftecs control, but Justin handled the issue quickly and thoroughly.

Great place to hit balls; plus the food at the restaurant is surprisingly good.

Highly recommend working with Rati (@rati_golf on Instagram) at GolfTEC. Between Rati’s coaching and GolfTEC’s cameras - which are invaluable tools to record and analyze one’s swing - I went from a 12 index to an 8 index in under three months last season. I resumed lessons this year and I’m excited to see how the work over the winter pays off this season. Rati does an excellent job offering multiple “feels” alongside instruction. If one feel isn’t clicking, we try something else. This has really helped me improve. Plus it makes talking about golf, playing golf and watching golf more fun because I now understand what’s supposed to happen. Rati is also a down-to-earth guy, endlessly optimistic, and fun to golf with. He’d pass the airport beer test - if I was stranded at the airport, I’d look forward to a beer with Rati. In terms of GolfTec details, I opted for the 12-40 package. 12 months of 90 minutes of simulator time a week, including access to cameras to record swings, plus 40 thirty minute coaching sessions (I stacked these during the season and pre-season this year due to a variety of circumstances). You can use the coaching sessions for work at the simulator, short game work at the Golf Center area, putting, or playing the on-site Par 3. The simulator time alone could be valued at $3,000+ (compared to a standard weekday hour at XGolf, which doesn’t have cameras). Overall if you make use of the practice each week you’d be hard-pressed to find a less expensive alternative for simulator time alone, much less the added coaching. As someone who already spends thousands of dollars on golf each year, and plans to do so for decades to come, learning to play the game feels like a sensible investment. In terms of the lessons themselves, presumably the approach is tailored to each golfer based on where they need to improve, their level of athletic ability, and their goals. I’m athletic-ish but stiff from my desk job, and my goal was to shoot in the 70s more than a couple times a year (so targeting a sub-5 index). I expected a full teardown that’s what I got from Rati, though crucially not all at once. While the answer in terms of where to improve was everywhere - from setup to takeaway to downswing to impact to finish, we took a step-by-step approach. Get one thing right, the onto the next. This helps build confidence and also enables one to keep playing golf alongside the lessons (the swing doesn’t temporarily become totally unusable on course.) We’ve focused almost exclusively on irons, along with a couple short game sessions dedicated to specific instances on the course (tight lies, longer bunker shots, etc.) I’ve never used Arccos to track my performance on course but I knew going in my weakness was irons - I never took a divot and was prone to big misses. In addition to improper setup and a poor takeaway, I would soon learn my swing path was significantly in-to-out (the opposite of over-the-top which results in out-to-in) and featured minimal hip rotation. The result, despite solid distance, was early extension leading to a lot of fat shots, hooks, the occasional shank, and back problems (I’m in my 30s and otherwise fit, not ideal). Fast forward to now and I’m starting to look like the muse Rati identified for my swing - Justin Rose (whose swing is slightly in-to-out). Check out the before/after image at address below, and a recent comparison of my impact position to Justin Rose’s. Getting there!

Thank you Rob Hutzler, Certified Personal Coach, for organizing the summer golf leagues. It has been another fun year! I hear my fellow players say the lessons that they have taken from you have really improved their game. Thanks for helping them. We can all benefit from lessons and I know you have a great state of the art facility to help golfers. The fact that you have the driving range right there , chipping greens and par 3 course help golfers get out after a class and practice. You can take lessons, practice, stop in the pro shop for golf equipment and eat lunch at Club Casa all in the same location. Stop by and experience it yourself!

Frequently Asked Questions About GOLFTEC Des Plaines

Why do I need a Swing Evaluation

The Swing Evaluation gives both Coach and student a clear visual and numerical baseline for both indicating where improvement is necessary and measuring the improvement. We highly recommend the Swing Evaluation for every student, from beginner to competitive player. It allows us to understand your current swing and goals and helps determine the right lesson plan for you.

Are your lessons expensive?

Prices vary by the lesson plan, features included, and region, but they are highly competitive with teaching professionals in each area. However, each GOLFTEC Student will start with a Swing Evaluation which is $150.
