  I've been an REI member for about 30 years. Went in to buy some hiking sandals. I recently smashed my big toe and just got the stitches out. Needing to get back on the trail to train for a couple of PCT sections I'm doing this summer. Visiting Chicago for the week and thought I'd buy here instead of back home in WA. There were very few customers in the store... 3pm Monday afternoon. Sales person didn't approach me, so I asked her for a sandal in a size 9.5. 10 minutes later she brought them out and then disappeared again. I think she went on a break because another dude showed up, he didn't check on me either. After waiting another 15 minutes for someone to pay attention to me I decided to leave. Absolutely horrible customer service. I'm not used to this at REI, at least not in the Seattle area. This is the Chicago flagship store. Do better! The only redeeming thing about the visit was the mural in the restroom. If the staff were as active in customer service this would be an awesome store.

  I’ve been an REI rewards member for a few years and for the first time had to show my ID today to make a purchase after I had given my rewards number to the cashier. She kept asking if I was SURE I was the account holder so I finally just gave her my ID. She then joked about how they do this for big purchases. I bought one pair of gloves for under $50. Really shocked at this experience, super off putting and I don’t plan on returning.

  Mega shout out to Connor at REI. Exceptional customer service, great attitude, a pleasure to interact with. Bought myself a 6 pack of carabiners, got home and realized I can’t count because there were only 5. It wasn’t until I actually read the tag as I was unclipping them that I realized I was missing one. I called and Connor went above and beyond to make sure I was taken care of.

  Went in for touring skins, asked the counter they seemed confused. Asked a "specialty" clerk, he had no idea what touring skins were and proceeded to tell me they did not have them. My response, "if you don't know what they are how do you know or not know if you cary them" REI website shows they have them.... I walked out due to bad customer service, the fact that the employees don't have knowledge of and about products they sell tells me the Co-Op premium pricing is worthless. You're better off shopping elsewhere.
