Ideal location for a stopover on our way to Scotland. But more than that, a lovely walk down the river bank to explore Durham. We caught the bus back, a short walk from the site - but you have to be nimble to cross the motorway slip roads. Being so close to the A1 we had expected road noise but didn’t notice it at all.

The staff when we arrived, looked and sounded quite stressed when booking us in, so particular friendly. There is only one toilet and shower block for the whole site, although they where clean, and the showers had plenty of hot water. The A1 road was near and you could constantly hear the noise from your pitch. Not sure that we would stay here again.

Mixed feelings about this camping. If you -as owner of the camping- during check-in start with the words “I’m going to give you the price first because we are quite expensive.” then yes, you probably are WAY too expensive. For us, it’s not about the money. We go camping because that’s the way we like to spend our holidays. But the pricing in England in general, and this camping in particular is completely ridiculous. £56 FOR ONE NIGHT!!! And yes, the sanitary is clean en in good shape. The camping is clean. But for that price it’d better be! In Italy or South of France you get 3 nights on a 4* camping with swimming pool and a splendid view for that price. Here you get meticulously measured placements, a noisy highway in the background and a life threatning walk to the bus stop to get to the city. For the rest this camping is everything that -for us- camping is not about. For us it’s about freedom, putting your caravan the way you want it to be, enjoying the day the way we want to enjoy it. Unfortunatly on this campground it’s all about the rules. Pretty much every prejudice of Jeremy, James and Richard, the guys form Topgear is persent in this camping. And that’s too bad.

Just had a total of 43 nights on Durham Grange site ( with the compulsory 48hr away from the site due to the 28 day regulation) We made this our base whilst my wife was in the Freeman Hospital for surgery I would like to say a massive Thank You to the site wardens Rob, Jenny, Andy and Jo for all their help, they went above and beyond during my stay, there was a few nights during the stay when the site was fully booked but they kept looking for cancellations on the system as I was unable to get on the internet whilst visiting my wife in hospital as I had no signal, they managed to get me a pitch for the whole stay which took a lot of pressure off me The whole site is kept immaculate, they are all very friendly, always happy to have a chat, I had seen on some of the reviews about road noise, to be totally honest after the first night I never noticed it all, it’s a bit like the church clock in my village that chimes every 15 minutes, and then rings out every hr, after a day you don’t hear it anymore I Only managed to see little bits of Durham during my stay but everything you need is only a short drive away, and the park and ride is very close to the site Will definitely be back again and hopefully be able to spend some time exploring Durham A great site and to top it off had some glorious weather whilst I was there 👍👍
