First visit and I will definitely be back! The staff were friendly and very attentive at the lifts, a few riders seemed to need help and the lifts were slowed or stopped to accommodate. No issues with the RFID scanners. Staff was using handheld at the beginning of the day and the gates worked well (remember where you keep it!) after visiting another local place where everyone seemed miserable to work there, it was nice to have decent interactions. I’m sure snacks and coat check aren’t the desired jobs, but they gave friendly greetings. Well maintained and clean facilities, friendly staff, decent trails and runs. I hope I get another chance to come on a weekday, I imagine it can get a little crowded on a nice weekend.

The mountain itself is nice for the price, the ski patrol also seem nice. But my reason for this two star review is due to two people in particular. One was a worker at the bottom of the chair lift who’s supposed to grab the lift for a split second so we can sit (as the lift is coming at mach 5 speed). But she can’t even take her hands out of her pockets let alone give the slightest amount of effort. I almost injured my knee due to how hard the lift smacked us. Even after multiple people would gesture to her as to why she won’t do her job, she just ignores everyone and continues being a burden. Meanwhile the girl at the top of the lift is on her phone and doesn’t stop the lift as my friend got stuck trying to get off and was hanging off the lift near the end. These two people completely killed my experience at that mountain along with the most snowboarding/skiing community I’ve come across. People cutting you in line right in front of your face, the most monotone and rude attitudes, this mountain was just bland experience and not what this whole sports about.

Great for beginners. $100 for rentals and 4hr lift ticket. Lodges are packed during weekends and holidays but most weekdays you get a lull.

The lift operators didn't stop or slow the lift after children fell at the landing of a beginner lift. This negligence resulted in a following skier colliding with the children still on the ground. This raises serious concerns regarding their safety protocols and staff training. They also block the only black diamond slope too often for their racing program and I cannot find any sign or banner saying the slope is blocked prior to purchase lift tickets. Ski sundown always block just half of their black diamond slope and their slope and snow condition is much better. If you want to ride in black diamond, you should go somewhere else. By the way, mount Southington's black diamond is only 500-600' long. Don't trust their slope map though.

TL;DR The new lift ticket gates they've installed this year create a worse experience for all, though especially for both beginner skiers and snowboarders. This is my hometown mountain, when visiting home for the holidays this year I was excited to see the season was already open and so little had changed about the mountain or the services they offer. The riding was great and the weather was cooperative! The one exception to this positive experience was the new ticket gates theyve installed this year. Every other mountain Ive visited on the east coast or out west has either a handheld scanner gun or an open style RFID gate with few or no obstructions for riders. Im fine scooting my board on and off a lift, but the hardest part for most beginner skiers and snowboarders is getting on and off of the lift on the first several outings. These gates are especially difficult for young children, who are not even tall enough to be scanned correctly. I’m not sure why a mountain that aims for the family-friendly and beginner crowd would spend so much money to install these and make a worse experience for beginners. These were early season weekday outings, the mountain was essentially empty and yet these gates still created considerable lines and bottlenecks by about 10am, especially once children started getting snarled in the lines. Unfortunately based on this I have to say that any beginner or even intermediate riders should consider taking a longer trip to another mountain for a better first time experience. Edit: wanted to add that the food in the chalet is very reasonably priced for a ski mountain, and the weekday pass was the perfect affordable day trip for me. These good points are why I was so surprised that they would shoot themselves in the foot like this.
