Today I experienced Timothy’s explanation of the spirit of the return system to me. The spirit is “just because one doesn’t get the satisfaction from it anymore doesn’t mean one should rerun it”. But this is and I quote from REI’s website and not from Timothy “we stand behind everything we sell. If you are not satisfied with your purchase, you can return it for a replacement or refund with a few exceptions within one year of the purchase date if you are an REI Co-op member….” Ultimately we are left with the nuance of what satisfaction means. This is a tough one. Timothy ultimately let me return my items. Which I’m grateful for. But Timothy also made me feel bad which is not very customer service like. He made me as a customer feel uncomfortable unappreciated and stupid. None of these things are under the spirit of how any establishment should treat their customers, whether or not the employee feels he has to lay down justice for his company or not. I’ve never been this unsatisfied with an REI representative before. It is truly sad.
