When I walked up to the counter to return a couple things, the lady working behind the counter was immediately hostile to me.
She started questioning me in an accusatory way about why I was returning the things I was returning. She started looking back in my history over the last couple years and questioning my decision-making as to why I bought the things I bought. Then she told me that I was supposed to return things within a month or two after I bought them.
I asked if the return policy had changed; I thought it was a year. Then she said "oh you're questioning me now? Well, I have the return policy back here you want me to grab it so you can read it?" When I told her it felt like she was being hostile. She started telling me that I could be banned if I continued returning stuff. This was news to me.
I've never been told if I return to slowly or too much I might get banned from REI. I thought the idea behind the return policy was that it gets people to buy more because it takes away the risk from a big purchase. And it helps you find the thing you actually want so you don't return it. I get the REI is in a tough position with it's great return policy. The policy is so good that people will take advantage of it. But also the great policy brings in people that will make purchases they wouldn't otherwise. If REI wants people to return less, it would be nice to create a friendly campaign around it not to treat the customer like an enemy randomly.
This is my 2nd hostile interaction at the Corte Madera store. I'm not sure if this problem is just at the store itself or REI overall. I want REI to be around for a long time, and I think there are great ways to get REI to get the results. It wants without alienating customers.
