My husband and I are new to Seattle, moved here about three weeks ago. This afternoon we came here to drop off two boxes of items and were excited to go inside afterwards to see what a Seattle Goodwill had to offer.
Now for context, where we last lived, we are used to driving up to the open bay doors and dropping off your items. Associates are always there to help you unload and take boxes from you. So the drive thru setup at this location was new but seemed simple enough.
The lines were moving rather slowly, which wasn't too big of a deal, but as we approached the front of the line, it became apparent while there were three store associates, only one of them was really helping donators unload. While associate #1 was helping a car in the other lane, associate #2 was at the blue bin organizing the contents or something, and associate #3 was not really contributing to anything productive.
Eventually the lane next to us opened up and several cars drove through, seemingly not dropping anything off. This lead to me thinking those cars had small loads, maybe one or two boxes like us, and they dropped off already. So in an attempt to help get out of the way for others, my husband jumped out to try to handover the two quick boxes we had.
Associated #1 approached him and started yelling that my husband couldn't just leave stuff on the side of the lane. My husband tried to apologize, that wasn't what he was trying to do, and that he was attempting to get the boxes for the associates, as we are accustomed to doing in our previous state.
Ok, fair enough. We screwed up. Maybe we did miss signage that explained things? And honestly we would have left it at that, including not leaving this review, had that been it.
However, associate #1 decided to talk over my husband, repeating that he can't just leave stuff on the curb and completely ignored that my husband was attempting to clarify. Instead of trying to explain anything calmly or acknowledging my husband admitting we made a mistake, the associate assumed ill intention and just kept yelling at him. At the same time associate #3 decided to chime in and berate my husband by repeating "You know you can't do that man, its just common sense", again offering no assistance, no additional context, and not listening to my huband's apologies. If that weren't enough, employee #2 was just yelling from the blue bin "you can't put that there" adding to the noise. Nothing productive from any of them other than publicly shaming someone, not guiding him what to do next, not taking the box from him, not even asking him to put it back in the car and wait our turn. We simply had 3 people yelling at us and not lift a finger to actually help solve the problem.
This review is for no other reason than the sheer lack of any kind of service or even treating someone who didn't know any better, with some basic common courtesy. A professional response would have been something along the lines of "Hi sir, sorry, but you can't put that there, I need to ask you to put this back in your car. Oh I see what you were trying to do, I'm sorry, that is not how that works here but if you can just [enter next steps here]". One person could have handled us while the other two put their energy into helping the woman who was holding up the lane we were in, expediting the unloading process, and probably AVOIDING this entire situation.
Overall it was a rather unfortunate display of rude behavior and a lack of customer service, not only for us, but for the woman ahead of us who never had anyone help her unload her packed car.
While we started out super excited to go in, after that interaction, we got out of there as fast as we could and tried to shake the bad vibes off while looking for somewhere else to secondhand shop.
