This American Eagle is being investigated by the ADA for two separate visits, displaying discriminatory behavior toward a disabled person, a service dog, and medical equipment. They openly stalked, harassed, and stereotyped. They were proud of their behavior and mocked me for simply existing while disabled. They followed us all over the store while we were shopping and collecting items to be tried on in the fitting room. They had several employees approach us within a 10 minute time frame to ask if we needed “help”. They did not do this for any other customer, either time. They also spoke into their walkie talkies about the inconvenience of “having a dog in their way” There was also a comment about not “taking eyes off” myself and my service dog. All we were doing was shopping like everyone else. While in the fitting room they came in at least 6 times, again within a 10 minute time frame to ask if we needed help. We felt so overwhelmed we had to leave, and in the process accidentally purchased a pair of jeans that were the wrong size. Because it was terrifying to be treated like I was committing a crime for being disabled, I called customer service before I went to exchange them. In the store the shift lead “Vanessa” was discriminating the second we walked in. She refused to exchange the jeans and ripped them out of my hands and held them behind the corner when I said I was going to call customer service again. It was mortifying and at that point I was in literal tears because Vanessa had made it such a huge scene to purposely embarrass me. Vanessa also flat out lied and said she was the manager. I asked for clarification if she was actually the store manager and she said yes. Customer service told me she wasn’t the store manager she was a shift lead. I had to ask Vanessa three more times if she was the manager as she had claimed and she then told me she was the “person in charge”, which is not a manager who could actually do something in this situation. Vanessa refused to give me the name of the GM, stating Vanessa was in charge and the GM didn’t get to decide differently about the exchange. As I was on the phone to customer service, completely stepped out of the way, Vanessa was directing employees to hound us, again. They were inches from me and my service dog at all times. They spoke into their walkies about my service dog and myself with no hesitation. Vanessa’s goal was to shame me for being disabled with medical equipment that takes up space, and for not just accepting her immediate mistreatment because she was stereotyping me. Vanessa was so jarring, discriminatory, and abusive. When asked why she was automatically predatory on a disabled person, she stated it “was the right thing to do.” American Eagle evidently trains their employees to run customers with disabilities out the door. The money doesn’t matter if the customer has extra needs. American Eagle will be posted on every site and forum possible of where not to go while disabled, all over social media in every space made to warn other disabled people to expect to be treated like less than human, and submitted to the ADA, BBB, Mall Management, and the Attorney General. What started as a simple exchange over a single pair of jeans out of the 4 I bought, not even a return, has turned it into a legality nightmare for American Eagle. I appreciate Vanessa loudly showing me how anti disabled she is, too. It’s a shame she’s been put in charge to encourage other employees to discriminate as she believes she has the power to do that with no consequences.
