- RMRebecca MerrillMar 10, 20241.0My fiancé took his car to Smart Start to get his interlock installed he sat there for over 5hrs and now the car doesn’t run at all. Car has spark still replaced plugs just in case, checked fuel pump its good, battery is good, changed the main relay, PCM everything we are at a loss of what they did. Put a lot of time money and effort into this car and its always been good to him and never left him stranded. They even tried to charge him a removal fee for taking it out of his car after it wouldn't start, called corporate and the said absolutely not and his next install is free of course at a different location as we wont be taking any of our other vehicles to this location. Don’t recommend, he wishes he would have trusted his gut when he walked in and there was kids and animals running around the shop. Car had to stay over night, went in Saturday morning and a guy who doesn't even work there was touching his car and messing with things. If there was an issue and they didn't feel comfortable doing it we would have rather them said that then to be in the situation we are in now down a daily driver and out money as we try to figure out what they did. Best customer service he had was the guy from corporate, and ONE of the guys who installed it who apologized to him. Front desk lady just said well our guys aren't mechanics or electricians. Car ran and drove when he took it in, even had to drive it in the shop since the guy couldn't drive a stick.

What do I need to bring to my installation?
Bring a photo ID and proof of residence in the form of a document verifying your address. How often does my Ignition Interlock Device need to be serviced?

What do I need for removal?
Requirements will differ by state, but generally your state authority must grant removal authorization before you can have your IID removed. You will then need to fill out the Device Removal Request form on our website and upload any official documentation that may be required to authorize the removal.
Do I need an Interlock Device on all of my vehicles?

How does an Interlock Device work?
When you blow into your Ignition Interlock Device, you're providing a breath test sample in order to start the vehicle. The device then measures your Breath Alcohol Concentration (BrAC), and will either say that you passed, need to retest, or failed. You will be asked to take rolling retests throughout your drive.
What can breathalyzers detect?
Breathalyzers only measure your Breath Alcohol Concentration (BrAC).
Is an Ignition Interlock the same as a breathalyzer?
Ignition Interlock and handheld breathalyzers both test your Breath Alcohol Concentration (BrAC), but an Ignition Interlock Device is only installed in vehicles and prevents the car from starting if there is alcohol detected. A handheld breathalyzer only detects alcohol and may tell you the concentration.
Can I unplug my Ignition Interlock?
Check with your state authority to see if you are allowed to unplug your Ignition Interlock before doing so.
Can someone else drive my car?
Yes, but whoever is driving the vehicle MUST take a breath test and pass before driving. Any failed test will still be your responsibility.
