- MDMike DuothatJul 15, 20261.0Im disappointed in the service we received at the jewelry counter. My girlfriend and I went by. My girlfriend was wearing her 14K gold necklace. The employee kept commenting how nice it is and said she wanted to hold it and try it on. My girlfriend had no problem taking it off and letting her hold it and try it on but what they said about it was just ignorant and completely unacceptable. They said "I don't see a 14K stamp or 585 on the clasp, so you have a fake!" I politely told her it's not fake because she's verified it.. I said a lot of vintage pieces or custom chains are either stamped on an end tag that might have flipped, or the Hallmark simply wore off from years of polishing. They stubbornly retorted by telling us if a professional piece of jewelry doesn't have an exact, legible stamp right on the clasp, it simply cannot be certified as real gold. Legally, the absence of a Hallmark does not automatically mean a jewelry piece is not real. Legally and also historically. They said they have been working there a long time at the Jcpenney jewelry counter.. I think all they see day to day is a bunch of mass produced commerical jewelry.. they probably rarely deal with true estate, antique or custom pieces. She's probably also confusing "JCPenney's store policy" with "the universal laws of jewelry." Department stores train people using simplified rulebooks designed to protect the store from buying or accepting liability for fake gold. They're likely trained to look for a stamp and just stop there. It was uncomfortable to be told the piece is fake when it's real 14K gold and the employee stubbornly arguing that they're right when they're 100% incorrect. Jcpenney in Richmond needs to do better, just unacceptable on all levels
