It’s 4:50 PM, and when I walked in, the employee said they were closed—even though there were people inside and their posted hours say otherwise. Terrible customer service.

I had one of the worst customer service experiences I’ve ever encountered at the Steve Madden Outlet in San Marcos. While browsing the shoe section and then the clearance area, I was standing in front of the racks when a young employee with dark, bushy hair brushed forcefully past me on her way to the back of the store. She never said “excuse me” or acknowledged that she had pushed past me. I initially gave her the benefit of the doubt, assuming it was an accident. A short time later, she came back out from the stockroom and once again pushed past me—and another customer—the same way, again without saying “excuse me” or apologizing. As someone in my 50s, I was shocked that an employee would treat customers with such disregard and act as though this was acceptable. As my friend and I were leaving the store, I commented about how rude the employee had been. I jokingly said that I “felt like pulling her bushy hair after she shoved me,” clearly expressing frustration to my friend over how disrespectfully I had been treated. It was never a threat or a statement that I intended to harm anyone. Before I could even finish speaking, another employee—who had long black hair, was wearing shorts and white cowboy boots—stopped me and asked, “Is there a problem?” When I began explaining that the other employee had been rude, she immediately interrupted me and accused me of threatening her coworker by saying I was going to pull her hair. I immediately corrected her and explained that I never said I was going to do that. She had misrepresented what I said and refused to let me explain. Instead of asking what had happened or listening to both sides, she loudly accused me of threatening an employee in front of at least ten other customers. She repeatedly told me to leave the store, embarrassing and humiliating me in the middle of the sales floor. When I calmly asked for her name, she refused to identify herself, saying, “It doesn’t matter,” before loudly ordering me to “LEAVE!” What disappoints me most is that no one asked why I was upset in the first place. No one addressed the employee who repeatedly shoved customers without basic courtesy. Instead, management immediately assumed I was the problem, publicly accused me of making threats I never made, and humiliated me without allowing me to explain. I had planned to bring a group of ten people to shop at this location. After witnessing how customers are treated, none of us will be returning. Respect goes both ways, and customers deserve to be treated with basic courtesy and given an opportunity to explain themselves before being publicly accused and thrown out of a store. I hope Steve Madden’s corporate management takes customer service and leadership more seriously than what I experienced today by the rude girls running their store today, July 3rd, 2026. Additionally, I was approached by other customers that were in the store who agreed that that girl who refused to identify herself should not have been yelling at me across the store as she did. Im hoping this store conducts a training class on integrity and customer service.

Purchasing clearance socks and one of them rings up as $18. I let the sales associate know they are marked $6.99. She says it's wrong. I let her know they ALL have the $6.99 sticker in the basket. She proceeds to say they are all wrong and starts removing the stickers. She says "We have markdowns all the time." My friend said, "Then markups?" She said, "YES." MarkUPS? AT AN OUTLET? What planet am I on? Hahaha never had a retail associate not honor the price marked on an item. Very strange power trip by the employee. 😵‍💫😆

Just had the weirdest encounter with the staff at this store. Heavyset woman with dark curly hair scolded me for trying on a shoe outside of the designated trying on shoe area (?!?). Her approach and tone was so rude that I asked if there was a sign or how I was expected to know that. She ignored my question and pushed past me, telling the other customer she was helping to push past me too. I said nevermind, I'll just leave, it feels like I'm unwelcome here and she just nodded and smiled. Too bad, I really liked this store but don't think I'll ever go back again because of just one bad employee.
