  I don’t usually leave reviews, but this experience has stayed with me for almost two years, and I still think about it. On November 1, 2024, I visited the store to purchase a pair of shoes. They didn’t have my size in stock, so an employee offered to place an online order for me at the register. Everything was going smoothly until I asked to use the student discount. I know Madewell offers a student discount, so when the employee asked for my student ID, I showed it to her. She then asked to see my government-issued ID to confirm my identity, which I had no problem providing. However, after that, she asked me to show my Blackboard account or show my tuition bill to prove that I was actually a student. Also, gave me a nasty look while asking me these At the time, I didn’t think much of it and complied. But shortly afterward, I noticed another customer, who was different race than me, receive the student discount without being asked to provide any additional proof beyond their student ID. As an Asian customer, that experience left me feeling singled out. I can’t say for certain what the reason was, but being asked for multiple forms of verification when another customer wasn’t made me feel uncomfortable and, honestly, discriminated against. This experience has stayed with me because no customer should leave a store questioning whether they were treated differently based on their race or appearance. I hope Madewell provides better training to ensure all customers are treated consistently and fairly.
