- PVPaola VianaSep 13, 20261.0STAY AWAY FROM THIS COMPANY IN GENERAL!! They’re nice at the locations, but Smart Start as a COMPANY sucks. They don’t help you at all when it actually matters. You got into an accident and can’t use the device? Too bad. You’re still going to have to pay for it, until it is removed, as well as the in home device that the judge may appoint to you. You can’t have someone else take off the device. They have to send someone to take it off from your device and will charge whatever they seem fit to do so. My initial quote for my in home device was $146. I fell behind and made a payment arrangement to get caught up by paying $250 on that device, but now that I can’t continue to pay that same amount, they won’t change it back to my original quote, because I still have to pay for the previous device that was in the car that I didn’t even use because it was at the shop… so my payments have to be done through Credit and Collection, and they’re closed on weekends lol So it’s weekend and I finally have the money to make the payment YET conveniently for them they’re closed now, so my device will go into lock out even if I pay from the portal. And whatever late fees or whatever will accrue… So thank you for nothing. I want to change to a different service company SO BAD, as there are far better ones (I only came to SMART START because my stupid lawyer recommended it), and I can’t even do so because it’ll cost me so much money to have a new device and pay off these bogus charges. So please heed my warning DO NOT GO WITH THEM!

Requirements will differ by state, but generally your state authority must grant removal authorization before you can have your IID removed. You will then need to fill out the Device Removal Request form on our website and upload any official documentation that may be required to authorize the removal.
Do I need an Interlock Device on all of my vehicles?
Some states will require that you have an Ignition Interlock Device installed on all cars registered to you, but most states will just require that whichever vehicle you drive have an IID installed. Check with your state authority to see if you will need an IID installed on all of your cars.

How does an Interlock Device work?
When you blow into your Ignition Interlock Device, you're providing a breath test sample in order to start the vehicle. The device then measures your Breath Alcohol Concentration (BrAC), and will either say that you passed, need to retest, or failed. You will be asked to take rolling retests throughout your drive.

Breathalyzers only measure your Breath Alcohol Concentration (BrAC).
Is an Ignition Interlock the same as a breathalyzer?
Ignition Interlock and handheld breathalyzers both test your Breath Alcohol Concentration (BrAC), but an Ignition Interlock Device is only installed in vehicles and prevents the car from starting if there is alcohol detected. A handheld breathalyzer only detects alcohol and may tell you the concentration.
Can I unplug my Ignition Interlock?

Can someone else drive my car?
