I’ve been a loyal customer at this JCPenney location for years, and until recently I genuinely enjoyed shopping here. As a mother of two daughters who like to try on multiple outfits, I especially appreciated the accommodating fitting room setup and the overall welcoming environment. We often spend a significant amount of time in the store, and I’ve always made an effort to be respectful customers by cleaning up after ourselves and treating staff courteously.
Unfortunately, my experience has changed dramatically since an employee named Lan began working at this location.
On Saturday, 4/18 at approximately 7:30 PM, my husband was waiting near the fitting room area while my daughter and I were actively using the fitting rooms. There was already a large family occupying much of the seating area, so his presence there was completely normal and appropriate. Lan approached him and questioned why he was there. After he explained he was waiting for his wife and daughter, her behavior became increasingly uncomfortable.
She proceeded to closely monitor and follow not only my husband, but also me and my young child throughout the store. At one point, after repeated glaring, hovering, and following behavior, I finally asked her directly, “Can I help you?” She responded by repeatedly asking whether we were “okay,” despite the fact that it was obvious we were simply shopping. The interaction felt accusatory and hostile rather than customer-focused.
To be very clear: the several hundred dollars’ worth of merchandise we were shopping for was fully intended to be purchased. In fact, the balance has already been paid. I understand loss prevention is part of retail, and I fully support stores protecting themselves from theft. However, there is a major difference between reasonable customer service awareness and repeatedly targeting, following, and intimidating paying customers.
Unfortunately, the same thing happened again tonight, Sunday 5/11 (Mother’s Day), while shopping for a few last-minute items before our family trip to Universal and Disney. Upon arrival, Lan immediately resumed the same behavior, and shortly afterward a loss prevention associate began noticeably following us through the store. After seeing him repeatedly circle us, even my husband commented on how obvious it was.
At this point, the pattern feels deliberate and discriminatory rather than incidental.
I want to emphasize that I have absolutely no reason to steal from JCPenney. More importantly, no customer should feel like they are being treated as a criminal without cause while simply trying to shop with their family.
I am extremely disappointed because this used to be one of my preferred stores. However, after these repeated experiences, I no longer feel comfortable shopping at this location. Once my current balance is paid off, I do not plan to return unless I can feel confident that my family and I will be treated with basic respect instead of suspicion and hostility.
I hope management will take this complaint seriously and address the behavior appropriately so that other customers do not experience the same treatment.

The staff was helpful, clearance time, is definetly the time to go. Secret sakes are nice, but items are very expensive. Now, if you have money and don't have to worry. Enjoy!
