  One of the most uncomfortable experiences I’ve had with a brand. My wife and I entered J.Crew Factory in Reno, NV, around 1pm on Oct. 17. We inquired whether they carried the signature ‘88 rollnecks, at which the sales associate scoffed, “What are you talking about?” For a moment, I doubted whether we had used the right term as English is my wife’s fourth language. I explained the design we were looking for, and the sales associate smugly denied they had any such thing. She then showed us a different piece, and told us, “See? Every person interprets words differently.” I’m still attempting to interpret hers. She ushered us out the door as she wished us several sickly sweet goodbyes. I pulled out my phone, opened the J.Crew app, verified the sales associate had indeed gaslit us, and re-entered the store. While another employee sized up my wife, I showed the sales associate the official in-app catalogue of dozens of rollnecks to ensure she understood her company’s signature viral clothing line so that she could “help future clients”. She snapped, “That’s not J.Crew.” I calmly closed and reopened the J.Crew app. She sputtered, “Ah, but we’re the factory outlet of J.Crew, not J.Crew.” She proceeded to tell me that their store doesn’t receive, quote, “the nice things from Italy, only from countries like Indonesia.” Arrogance and incompetence are a potent mixture. If J.Crew stops brewing it, perhaps future clients will spend their money on their clothes rather than their time on Google Reviews. And who knows? Upgrading customer service might avoid another debt downgrade for a company that peaked in 1988.

  Coming from the Truckee area, this is like a pilgrimage for me, but worth it! There doesn't seem to be a lot of high quality shopping in Reno, so I was thrilled to see J Crew Factory at Summit Sierra. Small selection that's updated regularly. Great spot for smart casual basics that are the cornerstone of my mom uniform 😀 Plus, the stores nearby make it worth the trip!
