I had a very uncomfortable experience at the American Eagle location in American Dream Mall on Tuesday evening around 7 p.m. I came in with my baby and my boyfriend planning to buy several pairs of jeans for myself after recently giving birth. I was actually excited to shop for myself postpartum, but the experience completely ruined my night. At first, a young male employee politely asked if I needed help, and I kindly said no thank you. A few moments later, another woman — who later claimed to be the manager — approached me and repeatedly insisted on helping me even after I clearly said I preferred to shop on my own. I already had a couple pairs of jeans on my shoulder and was simply browsing respectfully. What shocked me was when she basically told me she didn’t want me touching the clothes because she was trying to “keep the store organized” and “not make a mess.” She even pointed at another wall and compared it to the section I was shopping in, as if I had created the mess when I had literally just walked in. I wasn’t throwing clothes around, leaving piles, or behaving disrespectfully in any way. I simply picked up a few jeans like any normal customer shopping. I felt embarrassed and uncomfortable, especially because I was there with my newborn and trying to enjoy a peaceful shopping trip. I turned to my boyfriend and explained the situation to him in Spanish because he does not speak English. The woman then came back to confront me and told me to “watch my mouth” because she understood Spanish and thought I was talking badly about her. I was honestly in disbelief. I was not insulting her — I was simply explaining the situation to my partner. Things escalated further when she made comments like, “Customers are never satisfied. If we help it’s a problem, and if we don’t help it’s a problem too.” Her attitude was extremely rude, aggressive, and unprofessional for someone claiming to be a manager. When I asked for her name, she refused to provide it. Thankfully, another employee named Haydee stepped in and handled the situation professionally. She apologized and treated me with kindness and respect. I also spoke with some of the staff members from the Garden State Plaza team who were helping at the store that day. We actually recognized each other because I shop frequently at the Garden State Plaza location, and they immediately remembered me as a regular customer. They were incredibly kind and witnessed firsthand how uncomfortable and unnecessary the situation became. The only reason I completed my purchase was because of Haydee’s professionalism and because I genuinely needed jeans. Otherwise, I would have walked out. I originally planned to buy 4–5 pairs and continue shopping, but after being treated this way, I only bought two pairs and left feeling upset and judged. I’ve shopped at many American Eagle locations before — especially Garden State Plaza — and have NEVER been treated this way. At GSP I always feel welcomed, comfortable, and free to shop normally without being made to feel like a problem for touching clothing in a clothing store. This experience at American Dream was disappointing, humiliating, and completely unacceptable. No customer should feel scolded or monitored simply for browsing respectfully

I already submitted a formal complaint to American Eagle’s corporate office, but I am writing this review as well because this experience was extremely upsetting. January 19, 2026 around 3 PM, I visited the American Eagle at American Dream Mall (NJ). I am a military family member and requested the military discount that American Eagle publicly advertises. Despite having clear photos of both the front and back of my military ID, along with another form of identification to prove it was mine, the employee refused to even look at them and abruptly stated that only a physical ID would be accepted. There was no explanation, no attempt to help, and no respectful communication. The way we were treated was humiliating. We were made to feel as if we were begging for a discount rather than requesting a benefit meant to honor military families. This discount should not depend on an employee’s personal attitude or willingness. As an Asian customer, this experience was especially disturbing. The dismissive tone and refusal to engage made me seriously question whether racial bias played a role. I am not new to shopping in the U.S., and in over 10 years since retirement, I have never been treated with such disregard at any store. American Eagle promotes values of respect, diversity, and support for military families. This experience did not reflect those values at all. Extremely disappointing.
