I shop at Dunham’s regularly, almost exclusively for fishing gear. In the last year alone, I’ve bought multiple rod combos, a ridiculous amount of tackle, and kayak equipment.
I *want* to love this place, but I can’t. I’ll keep coming back for the selection and to avoid the Walmart experience, but unless you’re an avid coupon‑cutter or sale‑chaser, don’t expect real savings.
The store feels like walking into a Goodwill. The apparel section is cramped, and there’s no sense of welcome when you walk in.
For fishermen, searching the tackle section is nearly impossible. Much of it is stacked on the same hanging racks with no organization. If you’re looking for specific hooks, swivels, or terminal tackle, you’ll end up pulling piles off the wall just to leaf through them. I’ve had stacks of items on the floor trying to find something the website said was in stock, only to be silently stared at by staff who then walk away. They also love putting price stickers directly over product details, making it impossible to see what you’re buying. I’ve walked out before in frustration. They *do* have a wide selection, but they should organize it like literally any other tackle retailer.
I’ve bought combos here before. Today I wanted one as a gift, but I found it at a competitor an hour away for less — even after gas, I’ll still save money.
Heaven forbid you need an employee. There are often multiple customers wandering around looking for help. You have to go up front and hope someone is at a register, and even then those poor kids usually can’t answer your questions. I don’t blame the employees, especially after hearing them talk about what working there is like.
Go look at Indeed reviews: low pay, bad hours, poor management. It’s typical 2020s treatment of frontline retail workers. Can you blame them for doing the bare minimum? I can’t.
It’s important to look past the marketing and see the reality of the modern marketplace.
They claim “low prices every day.” One would think the disorganized environment, lack of investment in employees, and the depressing store atmosphere would translate into huge savings for customers. It doesn’t. Pointing to narrow, short‑term sales doesn’t change that.
You’d think they could at least afford a website that works. It’s 2026 and you can’t even use the search bar and filter by department. You can build a Squarespace site in a few hours for $25 that does more. They still rely on print ads. It’s so far behind that it feels like an insult to customers who actually want to spend money there. I regularly go to a competitor simply because I can navigate their site, check stock, buy, and leave.
They never say who they’re cheaper than. And with a very restrictive price‑matching policy, it’s clear low prices aren’t the priority. Compared to local tackle shops, Walmart, or Bass Pro, they might be cheaper — but usually only by cents or a couple bucks. And I can browse the competition on a modern website.
All this rambling because today I wanted to buy a rod combo as a gift. I found it $40 cheaper elsewhere. All their efforts to avoid investing in the store experience or their staff don’t translate into low prices for customers — it just means more of their $500‑million‑a‑year revenue funnels upward to the Lynn family.
Catch up to modern times and quit taking advantage of a small market. Sad.
