This is one heck of a shopping centre. Nothing like I've seen before. A wide variety of stores across a semi-chaotic layout. Some of it feels like it's in the carpark in a basement while other parts are open-air and nice on a fine day. They do offer a free map which is useful.

They canceled the hula show and made no announcement. The stage area was crowded with guests waiting for it. They put up nothing to deter pigeons entering and shitting everywhere and trying to take patrons lunch away. They had full power when they opened today and still had the restrooms for patrons shut down.

Security here is a joke. Not professional. No standards. Lacking public safety. Not a safe place to shop. Escalators and elevators not working. Shoplifters everywhere. Be careful for all the bird poop. Reckless drivers blasting loud music. Concrete falling from ceiling. Flooded on a rainy day. Playground always closed. No movie theatre. No toy store. Pay for parking. Be careful for dog poop. Entire mall smells like a cesspool. Odor of cigarettes and marijuana everywhere. Everyone under the influence of alcohol with police response every night. Definitely not a peaceful place to shop. Not enough entertainment for it being the world’s largest outdoor mall.

I love this mall! Ala Moana Center in Honolulu is the worlds largest open air shopping center. It has over 350 shops on four levels. You can find big stores like Bloomingdales, Macys, and Nordstrom, and also luxury brands like Chanel and Gucci. For local favorites, try Honolulu Cookie Company or Martin and MacArthur. There are more than 160 places to eat, from the Makai Market food court to nicer dining at the Mai Tai Bar. You can also enjoy free hula shows and live music every day. The mall is open from 10 in the morning to 8 in the evening. It is located at 1450 Ala Moana Boulevard in Honolulu. You can get there for free on the Waikiki Trolley, and there are over 11000 free parking spaces. The mall has a very interesting history. Ala Moana Center has no real competition, and this comes from its unique history and market position. The land was a swamp bought in 1912, but in 1959 developer Don Graham built the mall anyway, and even though critics called it Dillinghams Folly, it opened as the largest shopping center in the US and successfully moved retail away from downtown Honolulu. Today its dominance comes from being a first mover with a huge size of 2.4 million square feet and over 350 stores, offering everything from affordable brands to luxury names like Chanel, which no other mall can match. It draws 35 to 40 million visitors every year from three groups: local residents, luxury tourists, and office workers. To keep all these groups happy, the mall has constantly changed over time, adding a food court for families in 1987, luxury brands for Japanese tourists in 1990, and new department stores in 2008 and 2015 to compete with Waikiki and mainland retailers. Because it built a big tent early on and never stopped expanding, no other mall can really challenge it. Because it was built early and keeps improving, no other mall can really compete with it.
