What an absolute waste of time it was coming to this store. I called ahead of time and clearly explained my situation to a lady and she said yes we can do that. I drive there and the guy behind the window was refusing to understand what I was trying to tell him.

Incredible experience. Have been helped by Plange, Kyle, Stan, and several other staff. All of whom dedicated their time to ensuring that I understood all the aspects of the purchase process. Thank you Shane Co.

Kyle was incredible and very informative! Came in knowing nothing and he educated me on everything gently without applying any pressure to buy! We had a great experience and he showed us a very beautiful ring that we are heavily considering purchasing.

JoAnn took such great care of us as we went back and forth about what we wanted or didn't want as my husband upgraded my ring for our ten year anniversary. She was patient as I was indecisive and walked us through the whole process. We will buy all of our jewelry from here because of their care and attention!

My fiancé and I are getting married in January and started shopping for our wedding bands. I chose Shane Co. in Duluth specifically because of their business model—I read that sales associates are non-commissioned and hourly, meaning no high-pressure tactics, and I knew finding "the one" was going to take time for me. Despite my engagement ring being white gold, I went into the experience originally stubbornly adamant about yellow gold because it’s what I grew up seeing my Asian parents wear, and to me, it symbolized "marriage." I wanted a simple, practical ring for true 24/7 wear (no daily removal for sleeping or showering, no snagging prongs) that would also match my partner’s ring and style.
On our first visit, we spent over three hours trying on options. We were helped by JoAnn, who was wonderfully patient as we navigated balancing my desire for simplicity with my fiancé’s preference for a slightly more stylish band. We finally narrowed it down to a potential pair—mine was a v-shaped yellow gold band with a couple small diamonds and my partner's was a flat two-tone band with a white gold center and slim yellow gold bezels (a compromise between the white gold that suit his complexion better and the yellow gold I desired). We put down a deposit on the layaway pair, but after a day of reflection, I realized the band I chose was still too dramatic and high-maintenance for my daily lifestyle.
Wanting to be open-minded and step out of my thoughts around yellow gold, I returned a few days later to consider white gold, realizing it may be easier to decide since it would complement both my engagement ring and my partner's skin tone much better as mentioned above. Since I had narrowed down my criteria, I expected a smoother and faster process in this second round. JoAnn wasn't working, so we were helped by another associate (small frame, wavy brown hair, European accent). After laying out my criteria and having her make a few trips to the back cases, she delivered an unsolicited piece of "advice."
She told me that because I was "finicky" and had already spent over three hours in the store on my previous visit, I needed to figure out "what is the ring that will make you want to wear it every morning."
Whether she lacked a filter or thought she was being helpful, her comments were deeply hurtful, passive-aggressive, and felt judgmental. Finding a simple, durable, everyday ring that pairs with a partner's style when most display cases are filled with heavy stone settings is challenging. My fiancé and I had spent hours researching outside of our store visits already and the struggle was real. We were taking this decision seriously because it’s a piece of jewelry I'll be wearing for a lifetime, not just as an accessory that I'll take off when I feel like it. To be labeled "finicky" by an employee while trying to make an informed and important decision felt entirely unfair.
The only silver lining was her statement that "if the right ring was here, you would have found it by now", and that helped us make the decision that Shane Co. simply did not have what we were looking for. So we decided to cancel our layaway plan.
The whole reason I chose Shane Co. was because I thought I could take my time deciding on a ring I will wear for a lifetime, but ultimately I came away feeling incredibly upset and misunderstood. Even if she didn't want to keep going back and forth with a customer, she could have phrased things differently and communicate more sympathetically. We came into the shop with hope and optimism, only to be met with judgment. What was supposed to be a fun, memorable milestone in our wedding planning is now etched with this painful memory, and I hate that I'll carry the worry of being judged for taking too long into every other jewelry store we visit. Shane Co.’s slogan is "now you have a friend in the diamond business," but based on this experience, that couldn't be further from the truth.
