Absolutely horrible experience.
Ron,
Since my initial message has gone completely ignored, let me be absolutely clear: Smart Start has created a situation that is not only unacceptable, but now escalating because of your failure to respond.
I am a disabled veteran living in a VA facility, and your company’s negligence has already caused me to miss work, lose transportation, and waste hours dealing with a device that your team installed incorrectly. Your support representative’s behavior—laughing when I asked whether I’d be reimbursed for towing—was disrespectful and insulting.
What should have required one technician visit has turned into finger-pointing, zero accountability, and now silence.
Since Smart Start has chosen not to correct this, I will make sure every veteran community I’m connected to is aware of the treatment I’ve received. That includes every VA facility resident group, as well as Tunnel to Towers, US Vets, and additional veteran outreach and social channels. Veterans have each other’s backs, and I will ensure no one else is put through the experience your company has put me through.
This is your final opportunity to resolve this professionally. If Smart Start wants to avoid the reputation fallout that is about to come, I expect:
1. Immediate contact from a manager,
2. A technician on-site to fix the issue,
3. And written confirmation that all costs caused by your faulty installation—including towing—will be covered.
If you choose not to respond again, then you’ve made your stance clear.
Your move.

Smart Start sucks and so does the interlock system. It is impossible for me to do! The place that did the work and the people are awesome.

Do I need an Interlock Device on all of my vehicles?
Some states will require that you have an Ignition Interlock Device installed on all cars registered to you, but most states will just require that whichever vehicle you drive have an IID installed. Check with your state authority to see if you will need an IID installed on all of your cars.
Does the Interlock Device mess up or hurt my vehicle?
No, Smart Start's Ignition Interlock Device (IID) will not hurt your vehicle in any way. Our service technicians are the best in the business and are able to install on all vehicles, even hybrids and electric cars!
How long does it take to install an Ignition Interlock Device?
The time required for an Interlock installation will depend on your type of vehicle but we recommend blocking off at least two hours to make sure you are prepared to not miss any other appointments or work.

How do I use an Interlock Device?

How does an Interlock Device work?
When you blow into your Ignition Interlock Device, you're providing a breath test sample in order to start the vehicle. The device then measures your Breath Alcohol Concentration (BrAC), and will either say that you passed, need to retest, or failed. You will be asked to take rolling retests throughout your drive.
What can breathalyzers detect?
Breathalyzers only measure your Breath Alcohol Concentration (BrAC).
Is an Ignition Interlock the same as a breathalyzer?
Ignition Interlock and handheld breathalyzers both test your Breath Alcohol Concentration (BrAC), but an Ignition Interlock Device is only installed in vehicles and prevents the car from starting if there is alcohol detected. A handheld breathalyzer only detects alcohol and may tell you the concentration.
Can I unplug my Ignition Interlock?
Check with your state authority to see if you are allowed to unplug your Ignition Interlock before doing so.
Can someone else drive my car?
Yes, but whoever is driving the vehicle MUST take a breath test and pass before driving. Any failed test will still be your responsibility.
