It was fine, but everything I was interested in was just twice too expensive

I spend so much money here. It’s a smaller one but they seem to focus on quality over quantity. I’ve rarely leave empty handed. Whoever manages the stock process there definitely knows what they are doing

I am an award-winning journalist and longtime supporter of Half Price Books, and I have had a consistent experience at this location until today. Over the past several months, I have brought in current, excellent-condition magazines — often publications I have written for or been part of the publisher’s roster. About every 60 days, I drop off recent issues (current and previous month), and the staff has typically offered between $6–$8 for the bundle.
I always accept the amount because I immediately give the money to a young person in my mentoring program so they can buy a book in the store. The money never leaves Half Price Books — it goes right back into supporting reading, which is why I have continued to support this location. I have done this at least five times at the same store, often with the same buyer, with consistent results.
Last Month, with the same type, quantity, and condition of magazines, a different employee offered only $1.08. Nothing about the materials had changed. When the outcome changes that drastically with no explanation, it raises concerns about inconsistency in the evaluation process, and honestly, it made me question whether the decision was based on something other than the actual content.
What makes this especially disappointing is that I have always respected the legacy of Half Price Books and its founders, including Ken Gjemre. I even attended a class with Ken at SMU years ago, and I remember the emphasis on fairness, access to knowledge, and respect for people who love books and publishing. That is the spirit I have always associated with this company.
I am not writing this to attack the store, but to encourage consistency and transparency in the buying process. This location has treated me fairly in the past, which is why this experience stood out so strongly. I hope management will review how buyback values are determined so loyal customers — and people supporting literacy programs — are treated with the same respect every time.
