Vans is the original skateboard footwear brand. Rooted in youth culture with an uncompromised commitment to action sports, music and fashion, Vans has been designing footwear and apparel to inspire and empower consumers since 1966. From style icons like the Old Skool and Checkerboard Slip-On to performance-focused skate shoes and outdoor boots, Vans creates authentic products for those who never stand still.
Came to get shoes today. Was greeted well by a couple employees at the cash register.
Unfortunately, within about fifteen seconds of entering the store another employee stopped me on my way to the shoes at the back wall and asked me if I was looking for anything. I said I came to get some shoes, gesturing to the back wall. Then he made an unprovoked, off-color comment. "Well we only sell new shoes."
I didn't understand what he meant by that at first so I just said okay and went about looking at the options with the help of my 9yr old, while my 11yr old sat and watched.
But it set in after a few minutes.
Apparently, he thought I couldn't afford to buy Vans unless they were secondhand.
I don't typically leave negative reviews, especially about rude employees, but I've been going to Vans stores since I was a scruffy little 15yr-old rollerskater in California, who spent most of her free time watching friends launch themselves over bikes and mattresses at the skate park, and I've never, and I mean never, left a store feeling so hurt and out of place. I even called my brother, who used to frequent skater shops with me in high school, in tears and he reassured me that I hadn't misunderstood the intent of the cruel comment.
That being said, one of the employees from the front did come and help me pick out shoes I wanted - which I appreciated. I'm a bit picky and although I wanted to get what I came for, I also really wanted to leave. He also told me a bit about the history of the shoes I had chosen while I tried them on. There were no awkward pauses in conversation or attempts to oversell. He's the only reason why I got through the process without getting overwhelmed and leaving.
By the time I got back to my car, I was considering returning my purchase and finding a different store to buy shoes from. But I also really love Vans and the shoes the kinder employee helped me choose were perfect. So I'll just split the difference and make this my first and last visit here.
I can't recommend this store knowing how I felt walking out of it. I'd hate for some kid to walk in and hear something similar. If you do choose to go to this store, I hope you encounter the kind, helpful employee and the other one keeps his comments to himself so you don't end up like me, staring at a box of beautiful half cabs and wondering if you'd look stupid wearing them.
Bye, Vans fam.
