I’m very disappointed with the service I received at the Hamburg location. My wife and I drove an hour to specifically purchase a $2500 pistol and not only were we not greeted at the gun counter, but the man sighed when we asked to see the pistol. Needless to say, we left without purchasing the handgun. I rather spend my money with people who are personable and willing to help.

Gun counter experience is overall really bad. The guys selling are usually friendly and knowledgeable and fun to talk to, selection is fine, but once you pick the gun the operation and purchasing is really poorly managed and unreasonably slow compared to other firearms stores. Uninformed and seemingly lazy management and attendants.

I was at the opening of this store back in September 2003. Over the years, me and a buddy would venture to Cabelas about every two months to shop, grab lunch at the restaurant, and buy various items.
Eventually, the restaurant would close so we started going to other eateries in the area and then on to Cigars International to end the trip. We made a day of it and it started with Cabelas.
Always enjoyed going to the store, taking in the sights, and finding good deals on jackets, shirts, fishing items, and ammo sometimes
In 2018, I moved out of the area so my visits were once a year when I would go visit family and friends.
Since 2018, I’ve been back three times.
Recently, my friend and I visited a few weeks ago. We also visited last February too due to a family member passing.
Since the merger, Cabelas is not the same. High priced items, Colombia, Red Head, and some other brand. Gone were the Cabelas labeled jackets that were reasonably priced. I realize that Covid changed a great deal, along with inflation.
Cabelas seems to be pushed aside for something else.
The displays were dusty, the bathroom had some issues, some stuff needs replacement.
The restaurant area is an eye sore. The upstairs, which once had the furniture, seems like a ghost town compared to years past.
As far as employees, the only guy who even made eye contact with us was the gentleman at the knife counter, who has been there as long as I can remember. Good to see him still there.
The only other employees who engaged us, were the gentleman near the front door and two ladies. I needed to use the restroom so he’s waving to me and my friend to go over to him. I really had to use the restroom and I thought it was going to be in regards to opening a credit card account. I was trying to tell him I really needed to go so the two ladies were kind enough to inform me that the credit
card processing was down.
As we walked through the store, gone was the employees engaging the customer. It use to be that employees would say “hi” or ask if you needed help. Even near the ammo area, the folks who were assigned to that spot would engage people and chit chat.
As we went through the store, the gentleman at the knife counter was the only one who engaged us. Whether it was in the ammo area, fishing counter, or the store in general, no one said anything to us. The on e question I did have about jackets, the employee in the area wasn’t sure and went back to the assignment. No “I’ll check” or “let me ask someone else.” Right back to stocking items.
My friend did buy some jerky and mustard. At the register, the employee was on auto pilot. No “how’s your day, did find everything”. Handed my friend his change and bag without comment.
I realize things change over time. I’m not at the point of yelling at kids “Get off my lawn!” I don’t know if it’s the merger or what BUT, this Cabelas store isn’t the same. Is it management , corporate, or the merger? Cabelas seems to be loosing its own identity.
I gave it one star only because I can’t give it one and a half.

Years ago I went in to get store credit for a firearm I had come into the possession of. Store policy is to have the gun secured by a Firearms Safety Associate by the front door before proceeding to the firearms department. I talked over my intent with the gent manning the station, took my gun, began confirming that it was unloaded before handing it over (gun safety 101) when he suddenly lunged across the desk and ripped it from my hands, then slammed it on the counter with the barrel pointed directly at me (not having cleared it). I obviously decided not to come back.
Later, I'd get a gift certificate for Cabela's. I decided to order online (still angry about having staff point a to-their-knowledge-loaded gun at me). My order was cancelled a few days into processing, multiple times, without my being notified. Ultimately, after a month of this and chatting with the help desk, it turns out Cabela's knew I wasnt the one who bought the *gift card* so they assumed I was a scammer of some sort for trying to buy something with it. And, no, they couldn't fix it, it's an automated process.
So I went back and bought something in person. Brand new. Wasn't new, or even functional, when I got it home and opened the box. So I took it back and tried to get something else, but they were out of stock and weren't getting restocked for 'I don't know, maybe tomorrow, maybe never.'
The mini aquarium and mountain of taxidermied animals are both impressive, as to a lesser extent are the African Savanna and American Whitetail exhibits. Worth a walk through, but I'd advise against buying anything with more moving parts than shoes or beef jerky.
