I went in to buy a couple of jeans. Waited for a fitting room and no one helped me so I tried going in one and a worker stopped me and scolded me to not do that on my own. Continued to insist that she did not see me waiting. Then when i did go in to try them on, I needed a size down and asked her to find the size for me and was told I could just do it on my own. I left the store with no jeans.

I was excited to buy new jeans. They had the ones I wanted. No greeting upon entering the store, literally IGNORED. Then went to dressing room no greeting, how are you, find everything just what’s your name and walks away. Picked the wrong size, didn’t realize there was a button… could have been told… walk out ask if I can just grab my size then scolded and told I could have just used the button… oh okay, maybe as a customer service representative you could you know help and be friendly? It’s okay I just go buy online, I can afford the shipping thanks

I’ve always liked American Eagle, but this new return policy around tags has made shopping there way more stressful than it needs to be. If the tags come off — even by accident — the item can’t be returned. Doesn’t matter if it’s unworn, unwashed, or tried on for thirty seconds. And in a world where most people try clothes on at home because sizing is inconsistent, that policy just doesn’t match how real people shop. I also feel for the employees. They’re the ones getting yelled at for a decision they had nothing to do with. But AE’s leadership needs to understand something: just because staff see this rule every day doesn’t mean customers know it, or that it’s “common practice.” It’s not. It hasn’t been since the 90s. Most online retailers understand that tags fall off or that people need to fully try something on before deciding. And here’s the real human piece that gets lost. That wasted pair of jeans might be the only money that person had available this month. AE has built a whole brand around clothing being important — for confidence, identity, even job interviews. So imagine buying a pair of jeans you always buy, feeling confident in the fit, removing the tags because you think you’re good… only to find out this pair is off. Then being told it’s your fault for not keeping up with policy changes hidden in fine print you’d never think to check. It makes people feel stupid, embarrassed, or taken advantage of. Employees shouldn’t be stuck handling that fallout, and customers shouldn’t take a financial hit over something this small. It’s not even clearly communicated. In-store it’s printed at the counter, but online you have to go digging for it. If AE really cared about clarity, they’d put a big red notice on every product page saying, “No returns if tags are removed.” But they don’t — because then people might hesitate to buy. And let’s be honest, that’s where it starts to feel more like corporate greed than shrink control. At this point, if I have to choose between two big corporations, I’ll stick with the one that doesn’t punish customers for trying something on.
