On Thursday 11/13/25, at 4-4:30pm, I took my children to get some new pajamas at The Children’s Place after my son’s follow up surgery appointment at stonybrook. He is autistic and has a very hard time in the store but I figured since we were here for his post surgery appointment and right next to the children’s place, we could quickly get my kids some pajamas. They need them. It’s been a while since I could take them with all the doctor’s appointments and therapies. My son couldn’t control his impulses and it was extremely stressful. He was ripping things off the wracks, clothes off shelves, being loud. I was doing everything I could to keep him calm and I cleaned up behind him. One store employee, an older white woman with gray hair in a ponytail scoffed, rolled her eyes and made comments to the other African American woman employee who laughed along with her. They whispered and stared and scoffed and rolled their eyes and judged. I was visibly shaken and couldn’t gain control of my child having a meltdown because he was overstimulated. Not once did they ask if I was okay, if they could help, instead they made me feel horrible. The woman, brunette with glasses rang me out. She was really sweet and understanding. I thank her for that, it’s all I really needed. My sons been through a lot after a major surgery that almost ended in him losing his life, trying to cope all while being autistic. I asked for the 2 employees names and they denied me so I am writing a review in hopes that the owner of this store sees my comment. These two women are working in a children’s store. They should have grace and compassion. You never know what someone’s going through.

Place is always crowded and always under construction a lot of business come and go. But the holiday deals is still pretty good and it has a big parking lot. Howeve, if you don't like to walk it might not be the place for you.

We had such a wonderful time visiting the Smith Haven Mall. From the moment we walked in, the atmosphere felt bright, inviting, and well maintained. The mall was not overly crowded, which made it easy to stroll through the stores and truly enjoy our time together. We began our visit exploring Macy’s, where we found a great selection of clothing and accessories. The staff there was friendly and helpful, which made shopping even more enjoyable. Afterward, we headed over to Dick’s Sporting Goods to browse through all the athletic gear and outdoor equipment. It was fun to see so many options and take our time looking around without feeling rushed. Once we finished shopping, we decided to relax and treat ourselves to some delicious ice cream. It was the perfect way to end the day. The seating areas throughout the mall were clean and comfortable, allowing us to sit and chat while enjoying our treats. The entire visit was peaceful, cheerful, and a great way to spend the afternoon. Overall, the Smith Haven Mall offered a pleasant and well rounded experience with a great mix of stores, friendly service, and a calm environment. We left with smiles, full shopping bags, and a desire to return again soon. I would definitely recommend this mall to anyone looking for a fun and relaxing shopping trip.

Opened on March 12, 1969, the Smith Haven Mall in Lake Grove, New York, has long been one of Long Island’s most recognizable shopping and cultural landmarks. Originally planned in 1965 as the “Nesconset Shopping Center,” it became a symbol of the suburban boom that transformed Suffolk County. Developed by Leonard Holzer, the mall launched with anchors Macy’s and Abraham & Straus (A&S), later joined by stores like Sears, Martin’s, and JCPenney, quickly making it a regional retail hub. What truly set Smith Haven Mall apart from other malls of its era, however, was its embrace of modern art—Holzer commissioned major installations from world-renowned artists such as Alexander Calder, Larry Rivers, Jim Dine, and Robert Grosvenor. Calder’s vibrant mobile “Janey Waney” became an iconic centerpiece, and Rivers’ massive mural “40 Feet of Fashion” gave shoppers an unexpected dose of pop art amid the storefronts. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, the mall expanded, adding theaters, restaurants, and new retailers, becoming both a shopping destination and a community gathering place. In the early 2000s, as retail trends shifted, Smith Haven Mall underwent a major renovation (2006–2007) that added a “lifestyle wing”—an open-air section featuring Apple, Barnes & Noble, Dick’s Sporting Goods, and The Cheesecake Factory, blending outdoor leisure with indoor shopping. Managed by Simon Property Group since 1995, the mall continues to evolve with each decade. In 2025, Simon announced a multimillion-dollar revitalization plan including a landscaped outdoor plaza, new entrances, modernized interiors, and fresh tenants such as Zara, Sur la Table, and Golf Lounge 18. Today, Smith Haven Mall remains more than just a shopping center—it’s a living piece of Long Island’s history, reflecting the rise of suburban culture, the blending of commerce and art, and the ability of a community landmark to reinvent itself while staying rooted in local identity.
