Disrespectful and Discriminatory Experience
I have never felt so uncomfortable and disrespected while shopping.
I walked into the Alo Yoga store and was not greeted at all, even though employees greeted other customers who walked in after me. No one asked if I needed help. I stood there waiting, looking around, clearly needing assistance, and was completely ignored.
When I finally asked for help, the associate with red outgrown hair in a bun tried to walk away from me without saying a single word. I asked if they had a sweater in a certain size. She spoke into her walkie but did not explain anything to me or acknowledge me at all.
Another associate came out restocking the same sweater and put one to the side. I asked if it was an XL. She rudely said no, pulled it away, and threw it to the side without saying anything. When I realized the XL was too big for the person I was shopping for and asked for a Large instead, she again did not speak and literally tossed the sweater toward me.
At checkout, there was no line, so I walked straight to the register. The cashier looked at me and said, “Do you need something?” in a very condescending tone. I said I was checking out.
While ringing me up, as I was inserting my card, she said, “This is a high end store, so you need to call your bank to approve transactions from high end stores.” I was completely caught off guard by that comment. Right after that, my card declined. In over 15 years of owning a card, this has never happened to me. I have shopped at actual high end stores before, including Marc Jacobs, Burberry, and Tory Burch.
She then told me my card was blocked and asked if I had ever shopped at high end stores before. She also told me that I should be paying in cash instead of using a card, which made the situation feel even more inappropriate and targeted.
That comment was insulting and unnecessary. I asked to speak with a manager because I did not appreciate the way she was speaking to me. She laughed and pointed to a manager next to her, but instead another associate came over and repeated the same excuse, saying transactions decline for everyone because they have to call their bank first.
When I asked how that makes sense if everyone has to call their bank just to shop there, they kept insisting that I had not shopped there before or at other high end stores.
I left the store. Later that same day, I went to another store and called my bank before paying. My bank confirmed my card was not blocked and that there were no declined or restricted transactions on my account at all.
After leaving, I spoke to other customers. A Latino customer told me the exact same thing happened to them. They were buying Christmas gifts and said they would never return. I also spoke to another Latino person and a Black shopper from nearby stores. One said this has happened to them before at this location. The other said they refuse to shop there because they have heard the associates are racist.
This experience felt targeted and discriminatory. It felt like certain employees decided, based on how I look, that I did not belong there or could not afford to shop there. That is unacceptable. I am a business owner, and a 300 dollar purchase is nothing to me, but that is not even the point. No one should ever be treated like this.
I will never return to this location and I hope management takes a serious look at how customers are being treated.
