Disappointing Experience at Blick on Route 4
My husband and I stopped by Blick on Route 4 over the weekend, and unfortunately, this visit was not a pleasant one. My husband has been shopping at Pearl Paint — which is now closed and taken over by Blick — for over 30 years. He’s an art director and a graduate of Parsons School of Design, so he has been a loyal customer since his art school days.
When checking out, the young man at the register was dismissive and somewhat rude. My husband has always received his educator discount simply by providing his phone number — his account is in the system and clearly identifies him as a teacher. However, this employee insisted on seeing ID, with a dismissive laugh and an unprofessional attitude.
Even after my husband politely showed his credentials, the employee continued to repeat “it’s policy,” without offering an apology or showing any courtesy. In all the years we’ve shopped at Blick — including this location and the former one on Route 17 — he has never once been asked for ID once his educator profile appeared.
We understand that policies can change, but professionalism and respect should always remain consistent. It’s disappointing when long-time loyal customers are made to feel uncomfortable by staff representing such a reputable art supply store.

Blick lost a customer today. Why? Policy but mostly because there is an inept, rude, incompetent manager at the rte 4 Paramus store who does not seem to see the value in retaining her employer's customers.
Purchased two Albrecht acrylic brushes on 10/4. Total $34+. Brought them home. Soaked them. Went to use them. The hairs of the round brush shed all over my art. The long filbert fell limp and shapeless. Went to return them today - 10/7. Can't return brushes if they are used. Not even if they're defective. Manager, Sirra, told me I should have checked the brushes BEFORE I purchased them to see if the hairs would fall out.
Seriously? I said to her....Hmmm...the brushes had glue on them.
No offer of a store credit. No offer of a replacement. NO APOLOGY for her inability to accommodate me in ANY way.
I told her Blick lost a customer.
Her response? "Good". Yup. That's what she said.
I hate to say this because Blick is a family-owned business and we should ALL try to support these businesses, but THIS is the reason we go to establishments like Amazon.
I won't shop at ANY establishment with an unapologetic, snippy, rude, incompetent manager nor ANY establishment who will not accept responsibility for selling defective merchandise.
If I could give ZERO stars, I would.
