When the mall makes the decision to open, it does not just affect foot traffic. It directly impacts hundreds of employees across dozens of stores. District managers and corporate offices will expect their staff to report to work simply because the mall has chosen to unlock its doors. That means retail associates, maintenance workers, food service staff, and management teams will feel pressured to drive in dangerous conditions or risk disciplinary action. The Town of Salem does not plow private parking lots. The mall is responsible for its own roads and parking areas, and historically they are not cleared to a level that makes them safe during active storms. Meanwhile, both the State of Massachusetts and the State of New Hampshire routinely urge residents to stay off the roads during blizzard conditions. How is it justifiable to ignore that guidance and require employees to travel anyway? Retail workers are not emergency personnel. There is no essential public service being provided that warrants risking lives for shopping during a blizzard. This decision places profit above safety, and it sends a clear message about how employee wellbeing is valued. I strongly urge management to reconsider opening during severe weather events. The safety of hundreds of workers should outweigh a single day of sales.
