- NNNickOct 28, 20251.0My partner had a 9:45 am calibration appointment at Smart Start Ignition on Woodwinds Road in Cary. The technician wasn't even there! After sitting in the parking lot and calling around, a regional manager casually told her to come back after 10. People have jobs. People have lives. And this is a required service that affects someone’s legal standing, not a casual appointment you can just push back whenever you feel like it. We pay almost 90 dollars every month for what? To be ignored, disrespected, and told to rearrange our entire morning because your staff can’t manage a simple schedule. Completely unacceptable. This isn’t just poor service, it’s negligence. A missed calibration could have serious legal consequences and your lack of accountability puts people at risk. We will be contacting the Better Business Bureau and our local congressmember to formally report this location’s repeated disregard for customers. You owe it to the people who rely on your services to operate professionally, communicate clearly, and actually show up.

What do I need to bring to my installation?
Bring a photo ID and proof of residence in the form of a document verifying your address. You may also be asked to bring any documents that pertain to your case, depending on the state in which you or your program are located. How do I know if Smart Start's devices are compliant with my program?
Smart Start is a NHTSA certified Ignition Interlock provider, so we’re able to meet all of the alcohol monitoring authority’s requirements to ensure that you’re compliant within your state or county.
How often does my Ignition Interlock Device need to be serviced?
You will be asked to bring your Ignition Interlock Device in for regularly scheduled services. Call our knowledgeable Customer Care Center to find out how often your IID will need to be serviced at (800) 831-3299.
What do I need for removal?
Requirements will differ by state, but generally your state authority must grant removal authorization before you can have your IID removed. You will then need to fill out the Device Removal Request form on our website and upload any official documentation that may be required to authorize the removal.
Do I need an Interlock Device on all of my vehicles?
Some states will require that you have an Ignition Interlock Device installed on all cars registered to you, but most states will just require that whichever vehicle you drive have an IID installed. Check with your state authority to see if you will need an IID installed on all of your cars.
Does the Interlock Device mess up or hurt my vehicle?

How does an Interlock Device work?
When you blow into your Ignition Interlock Device, you're providing a breath test sample in order to start the vehicle. The device then measures your Breath Alcohol Concentration (BrAC), and will either say that you passed, need to retest, or failed. You will be asked to take rolling retests throughout your drive.
What can breathalyzers detect?
Breathalyzers only measure your Breath Alcohol Concentration (BrAC).
Is an Ignition Interlock the same as a breathalyzer?
Ignition Interlock and handheld breathalyzers both test your Breath Alcohol Concentration (BrAC), but an Ignition Interlock Device is only installed in vehicles and prevents the car from starting if there is alcohol detected. A handheld breathalyzer only detects alcohol and may tell you the concentration.
Can I unplug my Ignition Interlock?
Check with your state authority to see if you are allowed to unplug your Ignition Interlock before doing so.
Can someone else drive my car?
Yes, but whoever is driving the vehicle MUST take a breath test and pass before driving. Any failed test will still be your responsibility.
