- WMwilfredo mejiaSep 9, 20251.0Worst Company Ever – Stay Away from Smart Start If I could give zero stars, I would. This company is nothing but a scam. I had to get their breathalyzer installed after a DUI, and from day one it’s been nothing but excuses and extra charges. Every single month they find some new way to tack on more fees. Now that I already have my license back, they are still trying to squeeze more money out of me. To remove the device, they’re forcing me to pay for another month and even making me wait seven more days just so they can charge me again. On top of that, they constantly throw my device into “lockout mode” for no reason, just to make me pay more fees. This is hands down the worst company I’ve ever dealt with. I’m already in the process of filing a lawsuit against them because their business practices are pure robbery. Please, be aware of these scammers before you sign anything with them.

What do I need to bring to my interlock device installation?
A photo ID and vehicle registration are preferred but not required.
How do I know if Smart Start's devices are compliant with my program?
Smart Start of Louisiana is an NHTSA and state certified ignition interlock provider. We are able to meet all authority requirements to ensure that you’re compliant within your state.
What do I need for interlock device removal?
Please retain any / all forms given to you after applying for your ignition interlock license. For interlock removal, you will need to present a valid driver's license with no interlock restrictions. You may also need to present an official removal clearance / notification on letterhead or court minutes stating the order to remove the interlock. Once the above has been provided and verified, we simply remove your device.
Do I need an interlock device on all of my vehicles?
No. In Louisiana you are required to have an interlock on whichever vehicle you choose to drive.
Does the interlock device mess up or hurt my vehicle?

How does an interlock device work?
When you blow into your ignition interlock device, you're providing a breath test sample to start the vehicle. The device then measures your breath alcohol concentration (BrAC) and will either say that you passed, need to retest, or failed. You also will be asked to take rolling retests throughout your drive.

Is an ignition interlock the same as a handheld breathalyzer?
No. While ignition interlocks and handheld breathalyzers both test your breath alcohol concentration (BrAC), an ignition interlock device is installed in a vehicle and prevents the car from starting if there is alcohol detected. A handheld breathalyzer only detects alcohol and may tell you the concentration.
Can I unplug my ignition interlock?
Check with your state authority to see if you are allowed to unplug your ignition interlock before doing so.
Can someone else drive my car?
Yes, but whoever is driving the vehicle MUST take a breath test and pass before driving. Any failed test will still be your responsibility.
