This is an appreciation review for one of your fishing experts there at your Altoona store. My wife and I went in there to buy a fishing rod and equipment for our fishing obsessed son for Christmas. I consider myself VERY amateur at the sport and only go 5-6 times per year with weak old equipment. Let's just say I never truly passed down this gift to my son haha. So of course, when I went in to buy stuff for our son, let's just say that we were a bit overwhelmed.
When I approached the fishing department counter, I was pleased to meet Michael, one of your experts. I explained the situation and gave him our budget. Then I went on a tangent and mentioned how we have a bait casting reel at home that keeps getting that "birds nest" thing where the lines tangle up and it becomes a tangled mess.
Now mind you, this had absolutely NOTHING to do with a sale. Michael stood there for 15 minutes and went over everything to know about a bait casting reel. Then he explained the differences in reel sizes and grips for another 15 minutes, showing us everything there is to know about the equipment and how to properly use it and when to use each setup. We're talking about stringing it, keeping the reel so that it won't ever jam if you cast it, and set it correctly, different weights of lures, etc.
And only THEN did he get back to the sale.
I say this as a compliment, because he wasn't there to sell us the biggest rig or wow us with the fanciest gadgets. He was there to educate first, then gently point us into a spot that made the most sense for us as amateur anglers. We found a combo rod/reel that met our budget and the type of fishing that our son does and even picked out another ice fishing reel and lures based on our new info from Michael. We were so impressed that we actually signed up for a Bass Pro Shops Club credit card, knowing for sure that we'd be back in the future.
After he found us the perfect setup, I shook his hand and thanked him for everything. When was the last time YOU did that in a retail store to an employee??
You've earned a customer FOR LIFE.
Could we have done the same at another box store? Yes for sure, we could have. But we'd be in the same situation. We'd be uneducated and just as clueless as before. And there would be no loyalty at all or trust built. But now we have a little knowledge + equipment and know how to use it. Sure there's online tutorials everywhere, but nothing beats that face to face experience that builds TRUST.
My only regret was us not getting a photo taken with Michael (and maybe asking him to take us out fishing with us lol). Please do me a favor and show him this note. Thanks again!

Decided to get a home defense gun for Christmas. We went to the Altoona Bass Pro Shop, not our first choice or first stop. At the gun counter we find five sales associates huddled around a computer doing the federal paperwork for a gun sale. There were a handful of other customers and myself being completely ignored by the staff. After ten minutes of doing my own visual search of guns behind the counter, a sales person walks up to me, gets on a computer and calls out the name of the next person to be "serviced'. Rather than sales staff actually helping customers, they worked harder at ignoring them. I understand that Bass Pro Shops has a QR system to prioritize the next customer to be helped. It was painfully obvious that the employees were hiding behind that system so they could avoid actually doing their job. If the four available sales associates actually took the time to have a human interaction with customers then everyone waiting could have been served at the same time and there might have been some actual customer service. Instead they wasted everyone's time by ignoring customers and hiding behind a poorly devised corporate system that does nothing more than let the public know how Bass Pro Shops really feels about their customers. We left the store and won't be back. It was evident to me that most metro area consumers feel the same as me, seeing as how the entire store was mostly empty, only proving how arrogantly lazy the management and staff are at Bass Pro.

They have a good selection of outdoor goods. They have some really good sales if you watch their ads. It can be hard to find someone to help you.

As much as I love to leave 5 star reviews, for this place I will unfortunately have to leave 1. In my honest opinion this place was great for the longest time, it was a nice place to shop, eat and even bowl! But after what I encountered today I will no longer be stopping in. Unfortunately, when I was in there today I witnessed and overheard who I thought were to be managers talking poorly about one of their employees; It was something in the lines of “she needs to fix her face”. One of them then proceeded to go up to this said employee and tell her that (Mind you this hostess seemed super nice and was very polite) this
then seemed to visibly upset her and I felt so bad. I’m not sure when work places thought it was okay to talk to their employees like that but I think it’s wrong and disrespectful. I will no longer be coming in.
