Great value for money with a massive variety of affordable fashion and homeware. The store layout is easy to navigate, parking is convenient, and staff are always helpful. A reliable one-stop shop for the whole family!

Very disappointing customer service experience. We have been shopping at Matalan Southampton for decades, so it was particularly disappointing to see the standard of customer service at the new store, next to JD Sports and Argos. I am writing this as someone who was not personally on the receiving end of the behaviour, but who witnessed it happening to other customers in front of me in the queue on two separate days. What I saw made me extremely uncomfortable, particularly given how diverse Southampton is and how important it is that customers of all backgrounds and needs are treated with equal respect. What I witnessed On my first visit, a member of staff, L**y, appeared noticeably rude and dismissive towards a family from a minority background. There were facial expressions, an unpleasant manner and what looked to me like an unnecessary reluctance in serving them. The family were messed around and ultimately appeared to be served almost as though it were an obligation rather than normal customer service. I initially thought perhaps I had simply witnessed someone having a bad day. However, I returned the following day to exchange some items and saw the same member of staff at the tills. Again, I noticed a distinctly unpleasant attitude towards customers from diverse backgrounds and those who appeared to have additional needs. On more than one occasion, she appeared keen to swap with a colleague when certain customers approached her till. Seeing a similar pattern on two separate visits is what prompted me to leave this review. I obviously cannot know another person's intentions, but the behaviour I witnessed gave a very uncomfortable impression of customers being treated differently according to who they were. In 2026, that is something any major retailer should take seriously. Management For balance, the gentleman who appeared to be the manager - a young man with a beard - was lovely, respectful and professional. Hopefully he can help guide newer and less experienced members of staff towards the level of courtesy and professionalism customers should reasonably expect. New stores inevitably have new staff who are still learning, but basic manners, respect for disability, diversity and Southampton's wider demographic should not need much training. I hope this is taken constructively and that the member of staff concerned learns from it, because Matalan customers should leave remembering the products they bought - not an uncomfortable experience at the till.

Great new Matalan location at West Quay Retail Park. The store has relocated from its previous unit and is now situated between Argos and JD Sports. The new store is bright, well laid out and easy to navigate, with a good selection across clothing and homeware. Staff were friendly and helpful during my visit. Hopefully this review also helps clarify the location for anyone using Google Maps, as the old Matalan unit is elsewhere within the retail park. This is the current Matalan store. Well worth a visit. 👍🏻
