I rarely leave negative reviews, but this experience warranted one.
Yesterday, I made a $395.64 purchase at Thin Air Sports, including a hat, a pair of pants, and two sweatshirt tops. At checkout, the clerk (Jacob) stacked the items in my arms and sent me toward the door without offering a bag, despite this being a store located at the base of a ski resort and despite there being a large stack of multiple-size paper bags clearly visible under the counter.
I completely understand and respect Colorado and Crested Butte’s bag laws and the intent behind them. That isn’t the issue. The issue is basic customer service. No bag was offered at all, and only after I asked—because it was physically impractical to carry everything through a busy resort village—was I given a bag. At that point, I was charged $3 for an oversized bag I didn’t need, simply because it was the only option presented.
Adding to the frustration, this happened at closing time, and we were very clearly rushed out of the store, which made the interaction feel transactional rather than thoughtful or professional.
Thin Air Sports is one of the nicer stores at the base of the resort, which is why this stood out so much. A simple offer of a reasonably sized paper bag—or even a brief explanation up front—would have completely changed the experience. Instead, it felt dismissive and poorly handled, especially given the size of the purchase.
I hope management takes this as constructive feedback. The products are great, but the checkout experience and customer awareness need improvement.
