Gift shops filled with handmade items offer a unique browsing and buying experience, and they give you the opportunity to purchase something one-of-a-kind for yourself or a friend. At Oomingmak Musk Ox Producers’ Co-Operative in Anchorage, AK, every item in their shop is made by one of the 250 Native Alaskan women who own the Co-Op.
Underneath the wool of the musk ox, there is a soft, downy substance called Qiviut. Although it is eight times warmer than wool, Qiviut is surprisingly lightweight, making it perfect for climates of all kinds. The items in the traditional line are 100 percent Qiviut, or 80 percent Qiviut and 20 percent silk in the newer Tundra and Snow line.
What makes the items from the Co-Op so fascinating is the original nature of every item. No two pieces are exactly the same. The women who own the Co-Op live in villages throughout Alaska, and each village has a unique pattern for their scarves and stoles. Individual Qiviut items can be traced to a specific village just by studying the pattern.
Oomingmak Musk Ox Producers’ Co-Operative has been producing a number of beautiful and durable Alaskan native goods since 1969. From scarves and stoles to hats and tunics, each item is rich with the history of the village and the individual that made it. Every piece is quality-checked to guarantee that it will serve you for years.
Give the gift of culture-rich, handmade, and long-lasting protection against the cold. Call Oomingmak Musk Ox Producers’ Co-Operative today at (907) 272-9225 or stop by their shop to feel the Qiviut for yourself. You can also visit their website for a full list of their products.

Lovely little shop in downtown Anchorage selling wonderful luxury wool items, scarves, hats, smokeRings, and more. Not just any wool, it is wild musk ox winter down which is shed in the spring. Quite pricey but so worth it for one of the rarest, all-natural fibers in the world. Collected and knit by indigenous artists of Alaska and using designs specific to the individual Native Alaskan village cultures. Expect a unique scarf to cost a bit more than $300, but also to learn about the art, the artists, the oxen, and about Alaska.

A tiny freestanding store house in the middle of a business area. Paid parking on the street is on the other side of a nearly packed large pay for parking lot during normal business hours weekday. $1.75 in quarters will get you an hour. So, they have no parking right by their store. The store is tiny and has a few things out for example but not much other than hair or yarn samples in tiny tourist trap bags. If you want something they have them in bags filed away and you have to ask to see specific pieces. Best to look at examples online, educate yourself and then either buy through their online site or go with an idea in mind when you get there. They are very good at communicating about items bought through their site if they don't end up having the item you want. If they are busy, it could be difficult to get a good idea of what they have as there's not a lot of room or counterspace to stand at. Some items are backordered. But it's a great experience to go and actually feel the example pieces directly and then purchase as you see fit. They are worth the visit and consideration for a very beautiful, unique, and useful handcrafted item.

I love all information regarding quiviut yarn and the handmade products from it. Hollow fiber hairs from the musk ox Are softer than cashmere and Is a better insulator. Product sold online and in Alaska and British Columbia.
