I personally lived at Cedar Place for about 3 years - once in a studio unit and the other in a 2-bedroom unit with my husband. Overall, this complex is phenomenal. Great amenities (car wash station with vacuum, pool, Amazon lockers, etc.), great staff, and well-built, modern apartments. All units had stainless steel appliances and in-unit washer and dryers. Though pricy, it was great living here. And, within a 30-minute walk to downtown Cedarburg!
However, I knocked one star off my review because of the smoke detectors. The fire chief (where I live now) told me that you should not have smoke detectors in the kitchen, because they're ALWAYS going to go off the moment they detect abnormal heat. This is the case at Cedar Place. In my unit(s), the smoke detectors were so close to the kitchen that they went off almost every time we cooked in the oven or on the stovetop. We could not use more than one burner at a time without it going off, nor could we use our oven at more than 375 degrees without the detectors going off. If you cook often, you're going to have a hard time at Cedar Place, unless you'd like to stop every 30 seconds to wave a towel at the smoke detector when there's no actual smoke in the unit.
I addressed this with maintenance, who told me that they are supposed to have all the smoke detectors set to the highest level of sensitivity. Because of this, not only was it an inconvenience to cook, but we could hear smoke detectors from every unit around us going off. So, prepare to hear a lot of smoke detectors in the evenings when other people cook.
Also, when I wanted to get in contact with someone in the office, it was sometimes difficult. I was rarely able to get ahold of someone on the phone when I called during their regular business hours, and my voicemails were sometimes not addressed. This required more follow-up through email, or having to physically stop into the office. Additionally, when we submitted our notice to vacate, there was no communication between staff that we planned to leave, which almost caused us to have to pay another month of rent unnecessarily. Thankfully, this was taken care of, but a testament to communication issues.
(Also, when you get your security deposit back, PLEASE ask for itemized invoices if you've been charged for something unnecessarily or for something you think is inaccurate! Although it has been resolved now, we were charged for things we did not do. Double-check everything!!)
Overall, 4/5 stars. I realize no apartment complex is going to be perfect, but there were a few inconveniences where I could not give Cedar Place a full 5-star rating.
To the Cedar Place staff - thank you for resolving issues timely.
I would not recommend this place to anyone. Before I moved in, I was told I was the very first tenant in the unit, and they were just finishing up a few things. However, when I moved in there was a cutting board in the dishwasher, scratches all over their cheap laminate floors, and a huge crack across the entire bowl in the bathroom sink. My ring doorbell wasn’t working and they didn’t fix it for months into my lease.. the old owner hadn’t disconnected their device and they ended up having to put in a new one. This area is very noisy as there are a ton of little kids, unsupervised, ripping around on their bikes and toys out in other people’s grass and the parking lots. Out of all the apartments I have rented and the landlords I have had over the years, I have always gotten my security deposit back. This place will rip you off. No matter how clean you leave it, they charge you hundreds of dollars in cleaning fees. This was the worst experience I have ever had.
