We went to look at homes today, and this location was our final stop. We’ve been researching homes for quite some time to better understand pricing and what features we want. I am currently looking for a new home, and my niece is looking for her first home.
We’ve visited several locations, including Clayton Homes in Moncks Corner, North Charleston, and Walterboro, as well as Sangaree Homes, N&M Homes, and others. At every stop, we brought our dogs with us—one of which is a service dog. Every dealer we visited was welcoming and had no issues with our dogs, except for Clayton Homes in Orangeburg.
At the Orangeburg location, we were literally walking out of the second-to-last double-wide when a woman approached us very quickly and began speaking loudly about dogs not being allowed in the homes. Due to traffic noise, I couldn’t clearly hear her at first, but her manner felt abrupt and confrontational. I explained that we were unaware of this policy, as we’ve visited multiple Clayton locations—including sister properties—with our dogs, and no one had said anything. Her response was simply, “We don’t do that here.”
That raised obvious questions. What is different or unique about the Orangeburg location that dogs—including service animals—are not allowed? There were no visible signs stating that pets or service animals were prohibited. The only signage we noticed was regarding no food or drinks in the homes.
I’m not sure what caused Amy to be so animated or upset, but if there is a strict no-pets policy, that should be clearly posted and communicated upfront—especially regarding service animals.
As a result of this experience, you lost two guaranteed approvals for two different homes. We arrived impressed with the organized information packet provided(and found a house my niece liked), but we left feeling insulted and unwelcome.
