My experience with Sycamore at Fort Mill has left me absolutely disgusted with the management of this property and seriously questioning how resident safety is handled here.
Residents should be able to trust that the people responsible for managing their community are taking reasonable precautions to protect the families who live there. Based on what occurred here, I have absolutely no confidence in that anymore.
Most disturbing is what I believe was a catastrophic failure in screening and oversight involving an individual living on or accessing the property who, according to information that came to light, had an extremely troubling criminal background, including allegations or history involving sexual offenses and drugs. How someone with that kind of background was able to be on this property raises serious questions about what background checks were performed, what management knew, and what safeguards were actually in place.
This wasn’t some minor inconvenience involving parking, maintenance, or an unanswered service request. The situation ultimately culminated in a violent confrontation with law enforcement on the property in which the individual was shot and killed.
Think about that for a moment. Families live here. Children play here. People should not have to wonder whether management exercised appropriate diligence regarding who was permitted to reside in their community.
As appalling as the underlying incident was, my experience attempting to address the aftermath with management somehow made matters even worse.
During my phone conversation with management, I was specifically going over the bills, fees, and financial obligations I was being told I had to pay to terminate my lease early because my family no longer felt comfortable remaining at the property following this incident. This was a serious conversation involving my family’s safety, our decision to leave our home, and the substantial financial consequences being imposed on us for doing so.
Instead of handling that conversation with professionalism, maturity, and basic respect, the behavior I encountered was, in my opinion, downright childish.
I was trying to have an adult conversation about why my family felt compelled to leave and why I was facing significant expenses for terminating our lease following an incident of this magnitude. Rather than calmly discussing those charges and addressing my concerns, one member of management was so astonishingly unprofessional that she HUNG UP THE PHONE ON ME.
And apparently hanging up wasn’t enough.
I subsequently learned that she had instructed her subordinates NOT TO ANSWER THE PHONE when I called. I personally verified that instruction with an individual who works at the property.
Let that sink in.
A resident is trying to discuss the financial consequences of terminating his lease because his family no longer feels safe following a violent incident on the property that ended with a person being shot and killed by police—and management’s response, in my experience, was to hang up and then instruct employees not to answer when that resident called back.
That is not professional property management. In my opinion, it is grossly unprofessional conduct and an embarrassingly childish way to deal with a resident raising serious questions about his family’s safety and the money he is being required to pay as a consequence of leaving.
If management expects residents to honor their financial obligations, residents should at the absolute minimum be able to expect management to remain on the telephone long enough to professionally discuss those obligations.
When something this serious occurs, residents deserve transparency, accountability, professionalism, and a management team that treats their concerns with the gravity they deserve. They certainly should not be hung up on and then effectively stonewalled.

The property looks decent when you first drive up, but unfortunately my experience after moving in has been extremely disappointing.
My biggest issue has been the lack of accountability from management. When I moved in, the apartment had clearly not been properly cleaned. Instead, it appeared that someone simply painted over existing dirt and even cobwebs. I also had standing water in the A/C room, and rather than properly addressing the underlying issue, someone was sent to paint over the affected area.
Maintenance has been another major frustration. My dryer didn’t work, my A/C took more than three weeks to get fixed, and my oven doesn’t work properly. On top of that, there have been numerous additional charges that were not clear to me when I moved in.
What has been most frustrating isn’t that problems happen. It’s how those problems have been handled and the lack of responsibility when something wasn’t done correctly.
Based on my experience, I would recommend spending a little more elsewhere rather than dealing with the headaches I’ve experienced here.
