I moved into Whitney Gray (connected to Maurice Dear) apartments mid-September 2026. Though I have not lived here long, I have had such a fantastic experience with Julie (Property Manager), Larry (Maintenance), and the property.
The building itself is vintage and charming, with Jake's Famous Crawfish on the bottom level. Despite such a popular restaurant being underneath me, there is absolutely no restaurant smell or odor pollution. My studio apartment here has generous square footage despite being a studio (600+ square footage), which was the same size as my previous Portland apartment (except that one was a 1 bedroom). Very high ceilings and beautiful dark-wood cabinets and wall-trim. Cheaper pricing in Rent from my previous place too (I paid over $1300 for the same sized apartment near PSU, now I am paying around $1100). While looking for Studios and 1 bedrooms in Portland, this has been the BEST deal I've seen. Ideal, cute, PRIME location. I was so excited to get moved in. I was honestly surprised for the price of rent for how convenient and cute this apartment is. My current apartment is a studio in a sort of O shape (one partial wall in the middle), and the area that is meant to be the bed area has installed a rail for if I want a curtain or wall divider hung up, which I IMMEDIATELY took advantage of with a curtain for my projector. Whenever my friends visit, they're surprised by how big the apartment feels and how cozy the layout is.
The area is fantastic for exploring, with popular restaurants and stores just a few minutes walk away: Both of the Jake's restaurant locations, Powell's Books, Whole Foods, Bamboo Sushi, Cheryl's, McMenamin's Crystal Ballroom & Crystal Hotel, etc. I do not have a car so parking is not an issue for me, but there is a super convenient and huge parking lot on the same block (pricing is around $23 overnight).
The on-unit washer and dryer is conveniently located on the 4th floor (residents in the Whitney Gray are on the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th floors, with approximately 6 units per floor), and has not been busy at all in the 4 times so far that I have used the laundry units. There is a trash chute located on every floor. The trash chute has a bit of a smaller opening so I do not recommend using larger garbage bags since those at full capacity probably won't fit very well in the chute, I have not personally had a problem with my 13 gallon garbage bags. There is an elevator on the property, but also stairs, so moving some of my larger items was not a problem at all.
Despite the location of the building being on the corner of Harvey Milk and 12th Avenue, one would expect a lot of crazy noise at night (from the general public, traffic, typical busy-city noise), I have not been annoyed or kept up at all.
Julie and Larry in particular have been so amazing, professional, accommodating. Julie helped me secure this apartment (allowed a 2 week move-in extension) and has always helped/responded to me so quickly and kindly to any issues or questions I had. She goes above and beyond in making sure I feel heard and her service is immediate. When I mentioned that I am bringing cats to my apartment, she and Larry helped me install a screen for the window (my cats like to people watch, likes fresh air, but I was worried about their safety without a guard). Neither of them charged me extra for that service, which I thought was very kind and welcoming. Whenever I had a maintenance related issue, Larry is prompt and has always responded and assisted within 24 hours of my request. Even when I accidentally dropped my keys within a single DAY of moving in in the elevator crack (I'm clumsy), Larry retrieved my keys for me by the next morning. I recently had a wall-mirror of mine drop and break, and Julie was kind and confident that Larry could take care to dispose of the glass shards safely for me. Parking for my U-Haul on move-day was a little difficult since 12th Avenue can be pretty busy, Julie offered to ask Larry to try and hold a parking spot for me. I declined, but loved the offer. :-)
