I lived at Highland Pointe for about a year and unfortunately had a pretty frustrating experience overall.
When I first moved in, there was an active bee hive directly under my balcony that I couldn’t access. It took management three months to get a beekeeper out to properly remove it. During that time, my dog and I had to be extremely cautious just entering and leaving our apartment to avoid getting stung. This should have been treated as a priority, but it kept getting pushed off.
In December, I randomly received a letter on my door saying I owed an application fee, admin fee, and security deposit 7 months after moving in. There was no email or phone call, just a notice. Thankfully, I had written confirmation from a previous employee stating those fees were waived and that my first month’s rent would go toward my deposit. Without that documentation, I would have been stuck paying charges that weren’t valid.
The gate situation is also exactly what other reviews mention. They rarely work, and residents aren’t given a clicker. You’re forced to manually enter a code like a guest, and half the time the gates are just open anyway. Which I am led to believe is a big reason as to why thieves gained easy access to the property to break in a ton of car windows just a few weeks ago.
My move-out experience was probably the most frustrating part. I was told over the phone by a leasing consultant that only a 30-day notice was required, which I followed. Later, (by the new property manager) I was told it was actually 60 days and since I missed the deadline I would be responsible for an extra month of rent, along with a rude comment about how I should “read my lease next time.” The irony is my lease did state 30 days. That interaction was completely unprofessional.
To top it off, I received a final bill trying to charge me prorated rent for a day in April, washer and dryer rental, and garage rental even though my lease ended March 31 and I had already moved out. Luckily I caught this, some would have just paid the bill. The current manager told me that she was not able to move me out any earlier than April 1 even though my lease ended March 31. She then had to contact her regional manager. I ended up just being told I would get a visa gift card in the amount of the difference, which I never got a call that it was ready for pickup. As management, things like this should be looked over as you are dealing with other people finances.
I’m not sure if these problems are coming from the top or locally here in Yukon, but I would be absolutely devastated as a business owner, knowing that one of my properties that I worked so hard for is not being kept up with properly, and my residents are not satisfied
The only positive thing I can say is that maintenance was very responsive and easily the best part of living here. It does seem like they are making upgrades to the apartments but very slowly for example, my porch lightbulb went out a they replaced the whole fixture with a modern one.
Overall, I would not recommend Highland Pointe. It’s overpriced for what you get, and the management issues just aren’t worth the hassle.
