Unfortunately, our experience touring Dartmoor Place was disappointing enough that we removed the property from consideration entirely.
I first toured Dartmoor the week prior and liked the community enough to return with my partner for a scheduled 12 PM tour on 8/18. We were seriously considering Dartmoor as our future home.
We arrived about 10 to 15 minutes early and used the Butterfly system to contact the leasing office. We explained that we were there for our appointment, the call ended without explanation, and we were then buzzed in. When we reached the leasing office, the doors were locked despite two leasing staff members sitting inside.
Melayah, who had previously toured with me, recognized me and greeted us. She noticed we had just toured another complex and jokingly asked why we were over there when we “should be over here.” We understood the attempt at humor, but the experience that followed did not make us feel particularly welcomed.
During my first visit, I had already explained that we wanted a 2B/2B apartment and provided our budget. Despite this, before we were even shown a unit, the conversation repeatedly shifted toward price. Another leasing specialist repeatedly interjected from her desk, including to tell us that pricing had increased by approximately $120 since my previous visit.
This made us uncomfortable because we had never expressed concern about affordability, and the apartments were comfortably within the budget I had already provided. As a young black couple, the immediate and repeated emphasis on price left us feeling stereotyped. Whether or not that was the intention, that was unfortunately the impression the interaction created.
Another major frustration was our inability to see the floor plans we were actually considering. This happened on both visits. I could not see the specific floor plans I wanted when I toured alone, and when I returned with my partner, the same thing happened again.
We were told that the community was highly occupied and there was little available to view. Melayah explained that high occupancy should be viewed positively, essentially asking why someone would want to live somewhere with many vacant apartments. High occupancy was never our concern. Our concern was how we were supposed to make an informed decision when we repeatedly could not view the floor plans we were considering.
We were also told that even if we toured a particular unit, it might not be the actual unit we would receive at move-in and that we could receive something “similar.” My partner questioned how we were supposed to evaluate an apartment if the unit shown might not be the one we would actually receive.
The tour itself was equally disappointing. We were not shown the amenities, gym, mail/package areas, or community spaces. We were taken directly to an apartment with the lights off and given no explanation of the unit or its features. My partner eventually asked which floor plan we were viewing, and we discovered it was not one we had requested.
When we questioned why we were being shown something that did not match what we were looking for, the interaction became increasingly uncomfortable. When my partner suggested we could view the other options online since the staff appeared rushed, Melayah’s response was essentially, “It’s up to you, you’re here now.”
We eventually returned to the leasing office and were shown a 3D virtual tour, which we could have viewed online ourselves.
We genuinely liked Dartmoor and returned because it was a serious contender for our future home. However, we left feeling rushed and dismissed, and the leasing experience ultimately removed the property from our list. When someone is considering where to live, the leasing team provides one of the first impressions of how they may be treated as a resident. We expected professionalism, attentiveness, clear information, and an effort to understand what we were looking for. Unfortunately, that was not our experience.

I am giving Dartmoor 1 star for several reasons. The main and most important being, that I required an ADA‑accessible apartment, and I was told one was available. When I arrived, I learned that was not true. Because of their mistake, I had to move into a regular 1 bed 1 bath unit which apparently they have none that are ADA compliant, so I already had to pay extra for a larger apartment just to have a shower I could actually use.
Despite asking multiple times, they never showed me the unit beforehand. By the time I found out, I had no other options because my move‑out date from my previous home had already arrived.
Corporate is completely unresponsive — they do not answer the phone in any capacity. On top of that, they have dragged out issues I reported since the day I moved in, and here we are 11 months later still dealing with the same unresolved problems.
Because I’m in a non‑ADA unit with a wheelchair, there is naturally more wear and tear. Instead of taking responsibility for placing me in the wrong unit, they are going back and forth with me and trying to make me pay for repairs. I reported my deck being moldy and instead of fixing it asap they dragged that out as well and when they finally did, they only replaced a few... there are still more mold out there by the way.
Unfortunately, that is only the tip of the iceberg, they are deceptive, they say one thing and then turn and say they never said it, failure to reimburse me even with receipts as they promised, they will make a deal and go back on it and the list goes on, but I truly am only still here because of one person: Bijan.
I would like to share my appreciation for Bijan Hite. Although she is new to the community, she has already made a meaningful impact here at Dartmoor Place. This young, smart professional is the main reason I chose to renew my lease. Her service has been outstanding from the very beginning of her time here.
Bijan is incredibly personable and has a natural ability to connect with everyone she meets. She treats every tenant with genuine care and attention, whether she’s offering a warm hello or helping solve a simple or complex issue. Her kindness and professionalism show in every interaction.
She has all the qualities of a successful leasing professional — not just getting a signature on a lease, but building trust, respect, and real relationships with residents. She is truly an asset to her role, to this community, and to the company she represents.
Speaking for myself and many other tenants she has helped: thank you for everything you do. You are a much‑needed and greatly appreciated addition to the staff at Dartmoor Place.
