I rarely leave negative reviews, but prospective tenants deserve to know what they're signing up for.
This is the fourth student housing apartment I've lived in between my undergraduate and graduate education, and it has been, by far, the worst housing experience I've ever had.
My roommates and I rented here for a short-term stay while attending a summer intensive for a graduate program at WKU.
From the beginning, our experience was filled with ongoing maintenance, cleanliness, safety, and habitability issues that made this one of the worst living experiences I've ever had.
Within a day of moving in, we started to deal with repeated maintenance problems, including our air conditioning failing during extremely hot weather, leaving the apartment around 90 degrees. Despite reporting it early in the day every single day, no one appeared to be planning to address the issue before the weekend until I repeatedly called and pleaded for help.
The condition of the apartment was also unacceptable. We discovered bugs coming from the drains and air vents, raising concerns that went beyond the occasional insect you expect in an apartment. Even after maintenance treated the unit, the problem continued. We also found actual marijuana underneath our stove, making it obvious the apartment had not been properly cleaned before move-in.
To make matters worse, amenities that we were paying for were never actually usable during our stay. The pool, one of the primary amenities advertised by the property, remained unavailable for the entirety of our lease. It was incredibly frustrating to pay for an amenity that was included in our rent but that we never had the opportunity to use.
Most disappointing, however, has been management's response. While I understand that things break and apartments require maintenance, the complete lack of urgency, empathy, and accountability has been incredibly frustrating. At no point did anyone apologize for the repeated issues or acknowledge the disruption they caused. Every solution required constant follow-up from us, often involving daily calls just to receive updates or basic assistance.
We documented our concerns thoroughly and requested some relief given the number and severity of the issues we experienced. Rather than feeling heard, we felt dismissed. We were also surprised by utility charges that seemed unusually high, including estimated usage despite periods when no one was living in the apartment.
If you're considering living here, don't. Save yourself the physical, mental, and financial trauma, and find somewhere else! I strongly recommend touring carefully, asking detailed questions about maintenance response times, the condition of the units, and whether the advertised amenities are actually available before signing a lease. Based on my experience, I would not recommend living here.
DO NOT RENT FROM SAM AT AIRBNB. Please note - Airbnb is supressing negative reviews.
The very first communication was that the door does not lock from the outside. That was never rectified during my month long stay.
Then, I headed out to go grocery shopping for the week. I came back to find that there were no kitchen basics in the kitchen. Sure there were a couple plates and forks, but not a pot. Not a pan. Not a baking sheet. Not a cutting board, not a can opener, you get the point I stay at airbnbs because of the ability to cook for myself. Not sure what to do, I took myself out to dinner. I descided to go to the store to see if I could get some kitchen basics. Descided I could spend about $100.00 and it would just add $25.00 to my groocery budgert every week. If I didn't do that I would have wasted the groceries I already bought and that would have cost me more. I was able to do buy the basics and was very happy with my purchases. I removed all the lables and stuck them through the dishwasher and as you know the dishwasher backed up into the the sink and overflowed into the other sink. What I discovered is that the garbage disposal was broken as well as the drain clogged. But mainenance already knew that and mearly unplugged the garbage disposal rather than repairing the problem.
I called and asked for maintenance as the sink was clogged and reminded you that no one came to repair the door lock. Neither of these items were fixed for the remainder of my trip. Dirty dishwater smells rank cooking in the Kentucky heat. I did not want to make coffee in the kitchen any longer as it smelled like sewer. There's roaches in the kitchen
The bathroom sink was also clogged making only the shower functional. The shower was handicapped accessable, which I applaud, but nothing was done to keep the water in the shower. Quick learning curve on my part after the first shower I learned that if you are not holding the shower head when you turn on the shower it would wind up on the bathroom floor. I soaked up all the water from the bathroom floor and then realized this has been done so many times before that when you step on the bathroom floor planks the water would seep up in the seams of the planks.
There was trash all over the complex and walking too and from the apartments often smelled like excrement. I at first thought it was people not taking care of their pets, but after looking around this was not the case. So there is some kind of sewer/septic issue.
Prices here are high for rent (even short term) in Bowling Green and I was happy to pay a premium for a premium experience. Unfortunately, there's too much delayed maintenance and that is not what I got.
My security and sanitation should be the highest issues.
