I have had the unfortunate experience of living in two different neighborhoods managed by Associa, and based on those experiences, I would never recommend them to another HOA community.
In my first neighborhood, enforcement felt incredibly selective. My home exterior was always well maintained, yet if my trash can was visible for even a short time because of weather or timing around trash day, I would quickly receive a violation letter. Meanwhile, a property at the main entrance of the neighborhood sat for years with an overgrown lawn, weed-filled beds, and multiple vehicles, including some parked in the yard, with little to no visible action taken despite repeated complaints from residents.
Several prospective buyers reportedly told Realtors they lost interest in homes because of the condition of that property. When concerns were raised to Associa, the response from residents’ perspective was essentially indifference.
Ironically, when I moved into my current neighborhood, Associa was not our management company. Unfortunately, our board later hired them after what many residents now feel were promises that did not match the reality of the service provided.
Since then, we have experienced repeated operational failures tied to unpaid vendor invoices and utilities. We believed street lights were malfunctioning — until we learned the bill had not been paid. We had pond maintenance issues — again tied to unpaid invoices. And now, on the eve of pool opening, residents cannot access the restrooms because the water bill was not paid since January. It’s May.
An HOA management company is supposed to protect property values, manage operations responsibly, and communicate effectively with residents. In my experience, Associa has failed in all three areas.
If your neighborhood is considering hiring this company, I would strongly encourage you to do extensive research, ask hard questions, and speak to current residents in communities they manage before signing any contract.
