  Location, Location, Location and No Shortage of Issues After 13 -months of my wife dealing with cancer (chemo and surgery) we needed time alone to recover. With recommendations from good friends who frequent Mauna Kea Resort (Mauna Kea Beach/Hapuna Beach), we decided it was time to give this place a go. We reserved unit B23 at Hapuna Beach Residences for 10 nights. Located directly in front of the Westin Hapuna Beach Resort at Hapuna Beach (and within the Mauna Kea Resort property), the location is superb with views of one of the nicest beaches on the Big Island right outside your front patio wall to wall glass doors. Just what you would expect for a studio unit at $1K plus a night. Unfortunately, this building, from what we understand has been through changes in ownership, management, and renovation over recent years and all is not well. In addition, the unit we stayed in had recently sold resulting in additional confusion with the issues we encountered. Upon arrival the unit appeared lovely. However, the internet was down and the shower had no hot water. We contacted management the next morning, and multiple times thereafter in repeated attempts to get the issues resolved. Over the course of and throughout the next 8-days we had a constant barrage of various building maintenance and repair personnel visits (at least eight different people). The internet router and switch had failed. After two days of tinkering and “borrowing” the internet from other units a crew showed up and replaced the router and switch, we finally had internet on day three! Still no hot water in the shower! Through multiple daily visits and disruptions, the crews were unable to locate the water shut-off valves for the shower to repair or replace the shower valve. Repair/maintenance staff told us that this was because one or more of these valves are in adjacent units or units above or below, and no one had a schematic or any idea where they were. Eight days later the valves were located and a new shower valve finally installed, hot water on day eight! While a building maintenance manager did come by on day two to try and fix the internet, we never saw him or any other manager again. At one time a female building manager called and apologized and said they were working on the issues. However, not once did a manager contact us or come by to check on us or offer another remedy or any concessions. Someone did however send a bottle of champagne with one of the crews working on the shower to say “Sorry”. Since we do not drink champagne (not to mention it felt like a bit of a slap in the face), we gave it back to the crew. Throughout all this we never complained and accommodated and treated the repair/maintenance people like family, they were all great. We have never heard from management or other since. The beach is lovely, the staff at the Westin Resort, the Mauna Kea Resort, and the people of Hawaii were all fantastic. But life is short with great resorts and great beaches all over. It is unlikely we will return and we would not recommend Hapuna Beach Residences to anyone.

  Unless you own a home or a condo in the residence portion of hapuna beach resort , you cannot stay in this portion of the resort. The hotels there are Westin , and they sure are beautiful and centrally located.

  My favorite beach is Hapuna. Park then walk left all the way to the end. More private then the state park, but has a fee to park.
