*BEWARE* Mold & Ant Issue
My partner and I lived there for 15 months and have ran into so many problems.
The initial problem we faced as soon as we moved in were ants. They appeared all over the closet and in our bedroom. There has been instances where ants come out of cracks of the baseboard, crawling all over the bathroom shower, coming out the outlet switches in the kitchen, out of the drain, etc. We submitted so many ant requests, but it didn't help. My partner and I was extremely clean, even pest control couldn’t figure out the issue and had the same thought on why they were appearing despite the fact our spot was so spotless.
As for an even bigger problem, there is a huge moisture issue in these apartments, so much so that our apartment got MOLD! During the time, I was told by management that 2-3 other apartments also had been affected with mold as well. I heard one person’s couch was affected, as well as another persons closet ruining all their clothes, etc. Now for our experience: Once we moved in, we noticed a mugginess and moisture in the air, but didn’t think much of it. Then after a few months, we started noticing our clothes had mold on them, then looked intensively around the apartment at any and everything and found out it wasn’t just our clothes that got ruined. Several hats, bags, shoes, shoe racks, and our $2,500 couch had mold all over it. The management tried to help by providing remediation and offering to move us to another unit (which wouldn’t have done much since mold spores were on all of our belongings anyways). I also asked if they could discount our rent price due to the living conditions and huge inconvenience it was causing, but they declined.
The mold specialist that came suspected that the issue was caused by excessive moisture and their AC unit not being strong enough to handle the heat. We also received the mold report from the specialist who came to take samples in our apartment and the numbers were off the chart, despite having several dehumidifiers running constantly 24/7, which also caused our electricity bill to go up. It's crazy to think that we had to live in those conditions. Management had people come and "clean" the apartment walls, cabinets, and floors with a specific cleaner that will remove mold spores and had someone come clean our couch, which we appreciated. But based on the mold sample report, the cleaning done to the apartment and our belongings was not enough to fix the actual problem. Mold spores were still precent after the fact.
As someone who works from home, this entire ordeal was extremely exhausting and tiring. It wasn’t the lifestyle we expected moving into this “luxury” apartment and the potential health concerns for my partner and I who has asthma. Especially with how much we were paying for rent.
As for topics outside of our moldy and ant infested apartment:
- Trash: tenants don’t know how to use trash disposal, so some days trash bags pile up on the side of the trash area.
- Gates: the gates to enter the complex were broken constantly
- Noise: I didn't hear my next door neighbor but my upstairs neighbor I heard her clear as day everyday. The floors/walls are thin. I could hear ever footstep and her dog bark at all times of the day and night.
- Package room: I wish they had package lockers instead of one big room packages get delivered to. It was hard to find packages if the postal person just places it anywhere or tenants move it while trying to find their own.
- Walkways/stairs: walkways and staircases aren’t cleaned as regularly as should be
- Events: the office hosts fun events throughout the year which was nice
Overall the management were attentive in some areas, and I appreciate the effort, but I feel like once we told them we weren’t renewing our lease, they just stopped caring. Just some stuff to keep in mind if you plan on moving here, but i do not recommend.
