Our move-in experience at Malibu was extremely disappointing and fell far below what I would expect from a property at this price point.
My daughter moved into her apartment, and from the moment we arrived, it seemed to be one problem after another. Her key fob initially did not work to access her apartment. Once we finally got inside, the bathroom door was locked, and we had to call someone to come unlock it. Part of the refrigerator door shelving was missing, and one of the stove knobs was so loose that the burner could not be operated.
Unfortunately, the problems continued well into the evening. Although my daughter had already gone to the front desk earlier in the day to have her key fob fixed, she later discovered that it still did not provide the access she needed to use the elevator or garage.
When she returned home at approximately 10:30 p.m., her key fob would not open the garage at all. Rather than security coming to the garage entrance to assist her, she was instructed to leave her car and walk into the lobby to meet them. As the parent of a young woman returning home late at night, I found this particularly concerning. A resident should be able to safely and reliably access the building and garage that she is paying to use.
After she finally gained access to the garage, she discovered that her assigned parking space, which we pay for separately, was occupied by another resident's vehicle. The vehicle even displayed a parking sticker indicating that it was assigned to a different space. Resolving the situation required several additional calls.
Then, at approximately 11:10 p.m., she discovered that her refrigerator had never even been plugged in. She had already put items inside earlier that day, naturally assuming that the refrigerator in a supposedly move-in-ready apartment would be operational 🙄
Taken individually, some of these might be understandable move-in issues. Taken together, they are much harder to excuse. We encountered a locked bathroom, missing refrigerator components, an unusable stove burner, an unplugged refrigerator, repeated key fob failures, an inability to access the garage, and another vehicle occupying the assigned parking space that we pay for separately. It raises serious questions about how thoroughly the apartment was inspected and prepared before being turned over to a new resident.
I do want to specifically recognize Landon, who was extremely helpful late in the evening and genuinely seemed to be doing everything he could to help us resolve the garage and parking situation. We greatly appreciated his assistance during an otherwise very frustrating experience.
We chose Malibu and are paying a premium to live here, so we expected a professionally managed property and a smooth, safe move-in experience. Unfortunately, our first impression has been anything but that.
I sincerely hope management takes these concerns seriously, addresses the problems promptly, and ensures that our experience going forward is significantly better than our first day.
