My Honest Review of Living at Portico
Shortly after I moved in, I began experiencing serious issues with the apartment. Roaches appeared almost immediately. I had never encountered this problem before and Clarence a leasing agent advised me to purchase roach bombs and exterminate the apartment at my own expense. Pest control wouldn't come until the following Monday. To prepare I had to take everything I had just put away out the drawers and cabinets for treatment, which was a major inconvenience.
Not long after that, recurring leaks occurred in my closet and bedroom, damaging clothing and personal items. Maintenance repeatedly applied temporary fixes rather than addressing the root cause, leading me to suspect mold in the affected areas which later caused contact dermatitis. I caught on as I put two and two together that my symptoms could be caused by mold.
Utility outages were frequent, sometimes lasting several days that we would be without water and power. The building’s backup generator never seemed to ever function reliably, which left residents without power which always led to the water being cut off.
Additionally, car alarms and fire alarms went off constantly, sometimes for hours, making sleep nearly impossible. The ringing lingered in my ears causing tinnitus.
Safety concerns were also significant. Apartments and Vehicles, were broken into, some vehicles stolen or affected by theft. My catalytic converter was stolen, and after replacing my car, the license plate from the new car was even stolen. My Neighbor experienced theft of all four of her tires. During my time there, two residents were even killed on the premises, which created an atmosphere of insecurity. Of course security never saw nor prevented anything. Their presence was meaningless. The combination of constant noise, utility problems, and safety issues severely affected my sleep and overall well-being.
Billing issues were another major problem. The online payment portal, Click-pay, frequently displayed incorrect statement balances. Sometimes it showed the entire water bill combined which included pest control, trash, and admin; in addition to another pest control, trash, or admin fee which appeared separately, previous charges that had already been paid also reappeared on the billing statement. I.e. their might be excess rent charges even though rent was fully up to date or In some cases, previous water or sewage charges reappeared on later statements though that bill was up to date. The responses from the front office were often dismissive, and charges could not be clearly explained. When I challenged the water bills with Yes Management they advised Portico is the one creating the bills they are just a third party that distributes the bill. When I went to the property manager Shirley she advised the account was in review however it was never corrected over the last year and a half of living there and I had to dispute the bill every month in the leasing office in which they could never prove I owed the additional amounts and they accepted the rent. Which was highly frustrating and unprofessional especially being I was met with an attitude and condescending statements when holding them accountable for the additional charges they could not account for. These problems persisted, adding to financial stress. Clickpay would often "go down" once several people questioned it. Not to mention rent and water bills kept going up.
To top things off, I later learned we were also overpaying for square footage we weren't even getting. So I joined the square footage lawsuit with attorney JacobScholl.
Anyways, between maintenance issues, recurring safety hazards-especially people being un-alived on premises, lack of basic utilities, constant disturbances whether smoke or car alarms or leaks in addition to questionable leasing/billing practices/ rent increases, the toll on my overall health/finances and retaliatory actions for asserting residents’ rights, living in this apartment complex was extremely negative and I was greatly relieved to move out.
