No window cleaners.
Skidmore apartments are unique, cozy apartments in historical Skidmore college buildings. Most of the buildings are converted buildings used by Skidmore College almost 100 years ago. While the charm of the history and the location convenient to downtown is wonderful.
The buildings are unfortunately an energy efficiency nightmares. While the units are offered as value apartments, they unfortunately are not. The rents may be lower than comparable other apartments in the area, but the energy costs far out way the rent savings. There are no real amenities to speak off for the units. Since all heating is electrical and part of the tenants National Grid bill – not covered as part of the rent. The shock of 1 month’s bills far out ways the “value”. The total of all expenses is equal to a more modern building with emergency efficiency.
Since the buildings are historical (old) there seems to be no energy efficiency to keep units modern and cost efficient. The units are drafty and not well insulated causing them to be energy wasting pits. The appliances are also not energy efficient. The common areas (hallways) are not heated causing drafts into units wasting more energy. Heating costs could add almost 40% to your monthly Expenses. It is best not to take any unit in any building that is on the first floor as any exterior draft will freeze your unit.

I visited the office to ask about rentals starting in June. I was told there was absolutely no way there would be anything available under 2000/month and should just look in another town, my budget was 1800/month, not very far off. Now that it is almost June and they have some openings, they have changed their advertised prices for the same units to around 1400/month. This was blatant dishonesty in an attempt to squeeze extra money during track season and I am so glad I dodged this bullet. How could anyone put their health and safety in the hands of a dishonest company like this one? It is a shame such a beautiful area is being bought out by poor quality property management companies.
Response to below comment: There was no confusion and thank you for confirming that you prefer an algorithm to a face to face interaction with a member of the Saratoga Springs Community. I already took your advice and found a much higher quality apartment outside of town for less. Advice I will be sure to pass on to others.
Absolutely exploitative of their tenants, especially those with disabilities. My partner and I have been fighting for 2 years to get reimbursed for a month of rent due to an unusable apartment after a huge black mold outbreak. Our lease specified we would be reimbursed for an uninhabitable apartment due to unsafe conditions, but when we brought this up, the main office directly screened and ignored our calls, emails, and direct mail including attempts at small claims legal action. The mold damage, as mentioned in my partner's review, has left us both with long term health complications.
They also refused to control a dangerous off-leash dog on their property, (owned by another tenant) who had harmed me, my service dog, and several other tenants, despite making repeated promises they would resolve the situation.
One of my friends had a service dog whose nail caught a small corner of carpet (a few inches slightly torn up), and they charged her over $800 to fix it. They were replacing all unit carpets at that time and likely wanted to get away with not paying for the full project in her unit by keeping her entire security deposit. Meanwhile, previous tenants in our unit had left huge burn marks in the carpet and they never fixed those.
Some individual leasing agents are nice people, but this doesn't change how the company (Burns Management) itself does nothing to care for its tenants.
